Joel L. Bauer was diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma on January 16, 2010, after suffering two grand mal seizures while working in Black Butte, Oregon on January 4th. Anaplastic Astrocytoma is a Grade III non-curable primary glioma brain cancer. Three tumors are diffused throughout the right hemisphere of his brain and are non-operable. Joel is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy at OHSU in Portland.

Joel, 41, was born and raised in Salem, and graduated from McKay High School in 1987. He started his own residential construction business, Capital Contractors, in 1997, and is a member of the local Home Builders Association. Joel worked hard to provide for his family and keep Capital Contractors afloat, even when the building industry had taken a dive.

One of Capital Contractors’ many projects, completed with the craftsmanship of Barry Saxberg, was a large remodel and addition for the Setniker Family.

Joel and his wife, Angie (Saddler) Bauer, 31, and their two beautiful daughters, Addison (2.5 yrs) and Vivia (7 mos) own a home in West Salem. Angie was five months away from graduating from Lane Community College with a degree in Dental Hygiene when the Bauer Family’s life was turned upside down. She has needed to take a leave of absence from school to care full time for her husband and children.

The family shares a love for the Oregon Coast. It was in Pacific City where the couple fell in love, with surfing and each other
