BAN THE MOTHERPHUCKING BAG PORTLAND

Postby Lil' Snowy Plover » Mon Jul 12, 2010 11:06 am

YO, all:

Get your mangy carcasses out of the fart sack and come down to City Hall to ban the damn stupid plastic bags that clog our sewers and kill our ocean's critters and poison our food chain. I need you guys. I've been working on this for three years and finally, phucking finally, I think we're going to see some action.

Check for info-- beer is involved--- this Wednesday. I'll be there yelling my head off.

The "motherphucking" part should get alot of attention and support for a cause that even a "soccer mom" could get behind; that is if she isn't offended.

I'm in favor of brown paper bags like in the good old days. Reason being that several mills in Oregon currently turn sawdust from replanted trees into MDF, Particle Board, T-1-11, cheap plywood etc., so why not paper bags. They could be neatly refolded and returned to the grocery store the way my Mother used to do. They biodegrade fast and can be re-cycled into future paper bags. I'm not into paying for a reusable bag that according to a recent study has bucou bacteria in the bottom, ecoli etc. I saw a black plastic bag whirling accross the highway this morning and it flat PISSED me off. Further more I don't think that is a Snowy Plover on your moniquer(?). It appears to be a Kildeer.

Ban the bag but think about the replacement. Oregon is one of the few places where you can get brown bags as far as I can tell. It always warms my heart when I come back and can opt for a paper bag if I forgot a reusable. Interestingly, the paper mills that used to make them in Oregon have been shutting down -- millersburg was the most recent example. I was informed by a clerk (maybe clueless) at freddies that their bags are now made from recycled paper in china (of course). I agree that this stuff should still be made around here. But, it's still better than Chinese plastic bags. Not a big fan of the 99 cent reusable bags that they are selling and or giving away. It's all plastic. Sure it lasts a little longer, but it's still going to wind up in the ocean. Buy yourself a few good quality canvas totes (run you like 30 bucks) and you'll never have to worry about bags again. Paranoid about bacteria? Boil them for a minute then throw them in the washer. Done with the totes, shred them and put them in the city yard waste bin, or compost them.

I agree with e-z here. Just the other day I had a beer and found myself staring at a thick plastic Trader Joes bag and I thought: "I wonder how many plastic bags would make up just one of these plastic bags".... I get good mileage out of the one's I have, but it's worth pondering.
