Florence - Sharky?

Postby Expo713 » Tue Jul 12, 2011 12:21 pm

How sharky are the Florence jetties compared to other spots in OR, say Agate? Seems like there are a lot of incidents, which isn't that suprising considering it's a rivermouth. Any Florence regulars care to comment on their experiences? (i.e. "Have surfed the south jetty a hundred times and never seen anything." "Surfed there the south jetty five times and think I saw a shark on two occasions")

Its pretty sharky. In fact most of the Oregon coast from the Columbia rivermouth to the Suislaw is really sharky.

it's as sharky as any other river mouth around. it usually gets really good right around the salmon runs too.

No more sharky than any other sea lion rookery in the northern part of the red triangle.....

I surf there a lot, have for about ten years, and haven't ever seen one. Several of the locals have told me stories tho, and as stated above, you know they're out there around rivermouths. That's where the food is. Lots of sealife in the water there - sealions, balls of bait fish, porpoises, pelicans, ducks, whales, had a salmon jump out of the water and nearly land on my board once when surfing in the river. I'm sure whitey likes it there, too.
