The Coast Guard rescued a 36-year-old surfer off the Indian Beach in Ecola State Park today.
Aki Miyoshi, from the Portland area, was caught in a rip a quarter mile from shore, preventing him from getting back to safety.
Coast Guard Air Station Astoria diverted an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to the scene at approximately 4 p.m.
The MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew arrived on scene at approximately 4:18 p.m. and lowered a rescue swimmer. The rescue swimmer recovered the man, who was then hoisted to the helicopter.
The surfer was airlifted and transferred to Ecola State Park. Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue transported him to Providence Seaside Hospital in Seaside, Ore.
"I disagree with these experts. Someone has got to stand up to experts."
