Questions

Postby likensj » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:37 pm

Hello,
I am new to surfing, and I have a couple of questions.

1) Is a 4/3mm or a 5/4/3mm wetsuit better for the Oregon Coast?
2) Are hoods amazing or annoying?
3) A friend of mine who is moving away gave me a 7' yellow board...Is it possible to learn on a 7' board?
4) Someone told me that sharks are attracted to yellow. Should I be worried about surfing on a yellow board?
5) Would anyone be interested in showing me the ropes? No creepers, please.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

BlueSilver lives in a big, surfless city in another state and doesn't actually surf, so don't pay attention to him with respect to surfing. He also can't spell.

5/4/3

hoods yes. The water is not bad now but will get a lot colder in the next month or so. Counterintuitive but true.

Don't worry about the color, but get something longer. 8-9 foot longboard not a gun. It's worth the investment if you are serious about surfing. The boards you see pros riding in the mags are not the boards you want to start on.

Just don't think about sharks. If you suddenly find yourself thinking about them while you are in the water it might be time to go in. Trust the "vibe".

Probs won't find someone to teach you on the forum here. Maybe take one lesson and then just surf a lot. For your first while don't surf where you see people out in the water. You don't need those waves and you are likely to get run over or drawn out into a rip that you don't want a part of. Mainly, avoid agate and south beach to start and use your judgement.

I lived in Corvallis when I started and it went well. It was slow but steady progress with a lot of surfing and non-surfing rewards.

Have fun.

Thanks for all of the advice! I really don't want to be shark bait, so I think I will stay away from the yellow board. Sucks though. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to shell out much money.

Forget about that yellow board crap. Sharks want to eat you because you have all the soft pink flub and smell like french fries, it has nothing to do with the board. Keep thinking about whitey and your finished before you even got started. Plus you're way more likely to die in a car crash driving around looking for shelter from the wind than you are to be eaten by a shark.

Just make sure you post how awesome it was every time you take that yellow POS to short sands everywhere you can, especially here. I personally love reading up on everyone's good times! Wilbur is the best fat surfer on this page and he will tell you to go to PC and bluesilver is well.....addicted to the internet especially this bad forum and has nothing of any real value to add to anything surf related. Nor do I.

One more thing, if Mitch Effing Buchanon tries to sex you up let him. Twinfin Annie said someone told her that she had an awesome time with him!
