Family day at SS on Sunday.

My brother from Vermont got to see the Pacific for the first time. Got him out for a "surf" session. He paddled around and I pushed him into some wind chop.

My five year old son got out and rode some whitewater on the inside, he was stoked.

Zero expectations for surf so I was not disappointed.

Wind was blowing SW and swell was fairly crossed up. Wave faces were 2-3.5 ft. At 2:30 there were 8 people in the water.

I was able to find a couple of crumblers to ride...I had fun.

Water is still really warm.

Ahh Fluffy's back. Nice!

Had a nice time Saturday morning with about a dozen of my closest surfing pals, all tightly packed together at the lovely sandbar. 'twas a jovial atmosephere with lots of near misses, plenty of drop ins, conversations about secret spots between sets (don't think i wasn't listening) and slalom through those sitting on the inside. maybe fluffy can swim north next weekened to regulate?

Somehow I don't think Fluffy care's much what month it is........
Good to hear another contest bites the dust... No disrespect to the Noll family I think were all better off without surf contest, Hood to coast cluster F%#! and so on.....Go to the beach with your family or friends and enjoy teach the kids the basic ocean safety rules let them learn to surf if they choose.....Compete in a pool, run on a track, skate where ever you can get away with it.....Shortboard, longboard, ride a mat, bodysurf, ............Have a beach BBQ invite those old friends and new ones...Maybe Fish will show up you never know....Peace
Doc.....Did I mention the surf was good this last week........

Head high and a bit bumpy with a difficult section to make.

Option 1: line up deep, pump hard, try to get barreled.
or
Option 2: line up just after the section and ride the inside grinder through the boils.

Option 2 proved not that interesting, hence I kept going for option 1 and getting worked over and over again.

Paddled out last week expecting a great session. Within 5 minutes, the seam on my wetsuit splits in the crotch....brrrr, that is cold. 2 hours later, it is so cold, I'm literally freezing my nuts off. Caught a few waves, but stomach hurt to much to care. Go home, get on internet, find a steal on a size L XCEL infinity Drylock 5/4/3 hooded 2011...$310! Kind of a gamble because I'm just a tad taller than the reccommendation. Try it on...to short. SUCK. Now I'm stuck watching the cams for another week. Anyone need a size L Xcel with all the tags on it before I pay to ship it back...got it on craigslist rt now! Luckily my buddy got out today and scored some epic rides in a certain left hollowed beachy that has been kind to us the last 2 months when the swell is right:)

I surfed Northern Oregon for the first time in six years on Saturday. Two weeks ago I moved to Portland and was itching to get back in the water. I woke up early and headed off on 26. I had forgotten how beautiful the drive was. The added bonus was I was able to listen to both conservative and "progressive" talk radio all the way until 101.

As I approached the turn off to 101, I had to make a blind decision. I knew what the forecast was doing, and I was looking for some peaky beach break. I chose to go south. I checked out all of the surf I could access without paying a fee and did not see much worth paddling out for.

I got to SS just as the fog was burning off. I have only surfed SS a few times and have never had a great session, but always have had fun. Today was no different. I almost continued to go south, but decided that I mine as well drag out the quad and see what I could make of the mushy peaks.

SS was crowded and it got packed. The water was warm. The crowd was generally friendly except for some grumpy guys on the South peak. I got a kick out of them. They never directed their comments at me, but they seemed to have put all of their energy into running their mouths as opposed to catching waves. Also, you don't have a right to complain about anything if you ride a fun board. I got a few waves on the South peak, but the paddle battle was getting more exciting than the surfing, so I paddled north. I caught a ton of waves. The lefts were better than the rights, and I was able to get a few waves that had enough punch to get enough speed to slice them up all the way to the beach. After 4 1/2 hours of straight surfing I decided to call it a day. Today I am sore, tired but still grinning. That sunny day of gutless surf should tie me over for a couple of weeks until I get back over the hill to the coast...

surfed really fun rights thursday afternoon with a handful of others. got funky as the tide dropped, but nice to get a few at one of the funner waves around. as a side note, there was an old kook on a green-railed log that apparently called a girl a b!tch because she called him a "weenie". i only caught the late stage of the discussion, but message to said douche: you clearly are a weenie. there's no reason whatsoever to be getting into it with a woman in the water. you should be more respectful of what they put up with to be out there.
surfed more fun rights at shorties friday evening. just me, one buddy, and two others on a wedgy head-high peak at low-tide. given the setup, i don't quite understand why that particular peak doesn't work more often. surfed slightly smaller, but still really fun lefts at the south end of shorties saturday morning with nobody. forgot my booties on the deck, but the water was so warm it turned out to be a blessing. then, went back to shorties in the afternoon for some smaller, but still fun waves.
all-in, it was a great few days to be an oregon surfer, plenty of waves and so few people to have to share them with.

saw a classic scenario today. surfer A drops in on surfer B who calls out surfer A for his impoliteness. surfer A then cuts back into the pocket where surfer B is hanging waiting for surfer A to kick out. instead surfer A shoves surfer B in the chest and swiftly dismounts him. nice! surfer B was being a bit of a back-paddling wave hog so perhaps he deserved it but who the f*ck regulates PC these days? it is pure comedy out there. the ding repair guys should have some business after today.

despite the sh*t fight, there were indeed some decent waves. i'm proud to say i didn't drop in on anyone, was only dropped in on on twice and only had to nearly run over two fellows.
