Exactly... it's not like you're doing something that actually makes a difference in this world.

Surf when you can and then move on to the other things in your life.

Definitely a womanizer but I don't know about douche bag. The movie about his family was a little melodramatic. Kids make it out that they are all broken from the experiences but when you look at them they are all successful people following whatever dreams they have. The guy had a vision and wouldn't let anyone get in the way of it for better or worse. I think that's admirable on some level and a hell of a lot more than most people can say.

Surfing is selfish by nature. Not all surfers are complete selfish bastards, quite the contrary, but many will sacrifice relationships, jobs, money, time, and other things that could be selflessly spent in other ways just to be in the ocean. His singlemindedness is/was impressive and I know I could do with a dose of it. His method wasn't the greatest. I think it's possible to lead a similar life and give more stability and some kind life framework to your kids.

Yeah, surfing is dumb! A good topic for December.

Instead of thinking of all the other things I could be doing with my time, I like to think of all the B***S**T things I don't have to do because I am surfing. Like downloading cool cell phone apps at a coffee shop, or attempting to fit in with some type of post ironic self-proclaimed sub-culture, watching the propaganda tube, participating in consumerism simply for pleasure, interacting with people, appearing to care or do something about the latest fad cause, or thinking about the trivial BS plaguing most of our lives.

when the waves are fun and the time is right, surfing is as fun as it gets.

often the waves are not fun, nor is the time right.

then, it is time for other things,

like shoes, and ships, and sealing-wax,
of cabbages, and kings,
and why the sea is boiling hot,
and whether pigs have wings."

the only questions in my mind after reading this is:

is there something wrong with being selfish?

why is it always painted in such a negative light?

can't you be selfish and not be an @ss?

isn't being selfish a good thing sometimes?

No one's going to look out for you like you.
I guess you could say that there is being a little selfish and then there is gluttony

The reality is, everyone is selfish.

There is no such thing as a truly selfless act.

Any argument you have for all of the benevolent things you may have done in your life could be dis-proven in about 30 seconds.

There has only been one selfless act committed in the history of man kind, however that is an entirely different thread in itself.

Reproduction is hard wired in every species, but I don't think that's what WK was talking about.
