With all due respect to Mickey Munoz................. I'm starting a counter petition requiring SUPs to carry anchors.

Sorry, but I give SUPs the same shite I give kayakers, stay the f@#K away from me. Barely in control fucknuts...... If you use a paddle to get into waves, then use the the paddle to get away from the rest of us.

Yup...feel exactly the same way...about short boarders. However, I usually let set waves go through for them just to get them the fuk out of my way. Got nailed twice last week. Put a big ol' ding in the front of my LB and barely missed getting my head split open. Basterds should move down the beach when they see the peak already occupied or take fukin' lessons or something.

In all honesty, it should not make a difference what you ride, if you are competent. Most of the SUP riders I know, including myself, have very good control and can operate safely even in a crowded lineup. Why should anyone relinquish the peak to any one group just because of what they ride. Ability and courtesy dictates. If you feel that you have a special priviledge to the peak because of the length of the board you ride, you are going to be pissed off... On the same note, if you you have an advantage like a longer board or a SUP, you need to realize that and share accordingly, but take your turn for sure. SUP riders who are pigs suk!!!

It seems that one group in particular feel they are entitled to all the good breaks on the planet and they do most of the bitching about everyone else...I don't even have to say it.,,

Sorry... but I'm gonna ride what I want. I'll be polite, but I will take my waves and one way or another you will learn to share.

Bottom line is that you're riding a "vessel" even by Coast Guard standards and Sups don't belong amongst surfers and spongers, this has already led to zoning in parts of S.Cal and will end up happening elsewhere in the future.

Now with the aid of a paddle suppers with little experience can get to waves long before SURFERS who have decades of experience can get to those waves. All of a sudden the least experienced have jumped the pecking order and when they get into waves of consequence have the smallest skill set available to prevent accidents. I see lots of bails outside of everyone by people who just shouldn't be there, and they endanger the entire lineup when they do it.

Many (not all) SUP'ers I have encountered...
Seem to understand the resentment they generate...
If you are getting into confrontations...
You're doing something wrong...
Paddle out on something else...
Or paddle down the beach...
That's like, my opinion.

I understand what you are saying. I think that you are omitting all the newbies prone surfers that cause the same problems...but...

You know me and have surfed with me. I ride everything from my homemade alaias, my 6'8" quasi fish, 7'10" shorty, 9'8" LB and 10+ SUP. Surfing a SUP is fun, that is why I do it. In fact, in the right conditions it is just fukin amazing! I am gonna keep doing it despite the stink-eye in the lineup. If you feel you must judge me because of what I ride I'm sorry, but I can't help that.

Also, I don't agree that just anyone can get out there on a SUP and and catch waves without at least some surfing and paddling experience - especially on a more critical day. I have tried to get some of my freinds to go out with me, many of whom are very experienced surfers (just ask speelyei), and they are newbies all over again on a SUP. It requires practice like anything else. A total newbie will be humbled very quickly and relegated to the wash or the beach.

I would also ask - aren't we all riding vessels. The only difference is propulsion method. Don't spongers and body surfers use tools (fins) to get into waves...should they be banned as well from the peak...? Is not the board itself a tool for catching waves? I surf mostly in my area and we have quite a few SUPers here, I have yet to hear of or have any problem with any SUP surfers as far as lineup safety is concerned. Have you experienced problems...any accidents or close calls with SUPs? Honestly - more so than with regular prone surfers?

Here is what I think... I think the old time plank riders got pissed off at the guys who put fins on their boards. Then the wood board riders got pissed off at the new fangled fiberglass board riders. then short board riders took over anf got pissed at the longboard riders. Now a new efficient and fun way of catching waves has come around and everyone is threatened by it. I saw it back in the eighties when snowboards came out and everyone predicted disaster and mayhem on the slopes and they were banned at many resorts...and...well...you know what happened.

Or you could paddle down the beach...why exactly should the SUPer move and not you?

It may be new and "efficient" catching but it's not ripping. It;s slow and the critical part of the wave is waaaay back behind most of the sups. There are some who tear it up ok but it's not progressing the sport here in Oregon at all.

Surfboards have never come under CG jurisdiction but SUPs are on their radar and it's only been around 3-4 years in the mainstream.

It is up to SUPs to find where they fit in not up to an established sport to move over for the newcomers.... It's a big ocean and there are miles of empty beaches away from already estab. surf spots, which is why I got mine in the first place.

Good discussion maybe more people will have opinions?.

Ok - so we have switched from a safety issue to - it is not a "ripping" to your satisfaction issue. Ripping is an opinion, it is not the law. Progressing the sport? Surfing is a sport now? Might be a sport to you, but not to me, it is just what I do. Surfing is cool in all its forms. All I'm saying is learn to accept something new - is that so hard? Share goddamit.

Look - waves are generated far out to sea for us...not just you.

If you boil this issue down and really think about it and have some empathy, you will see that it is one group trying to kling to a past where they were dominent and controlled the lineup and want to keep it that way...well... "the times, they are a changing".

If there's a SUP...
I often do paddle down the beach...
I certainly don't want to get hit...
I don't jockey alot & usually don't have to...
But an SUP'er who recognizes their advantage...
Can certainly easily avoid a prone board filled lineup...
I have surfed for over 40 years...
I have relatively few issues with anyone...
I get as pissed or irritated as the next bobber...
When someone gets in the way or snakes...
Especially after the 2nd or 3rd time...
And try not ever to be that guy...
Even on my 10'6"!
Unless it's Gaz.

Foss reading you getting your panties in a bunch is pure comedy. You taking this argument personally is pure comedy. If you want to be one of "them" you will take the same $hit "they" all do. I just got one and love it but you will never see me in the line up. Ever. The paddle is made for f#cking off down the beach not the main peak which is usually the cause of problems. We have it bad here. I also agree with Gaz in that an SUP is in no way progressive, I have a 9'8" and it is clumsy as hell on a wave but fun. Flame away. Going for a long river paddle :D
