well, the D in TD lets you pipe in veggie oil or bio diesel. Met a farmer in Illinois this summer who just up and decided to do the conversion himself. All the plumbing was straight out of an irrigation project, but it worked. He had a trunk filled with strained veggie oil and had something like a 1000mi range -- all for free. He'd rigged a system that heated the oil with the cooling system of the car.

And elements are for douche bags. When I see one in the lot of a break I know right away that there is one less person in the water I'll have to compete for waves with. Sorry man. The bottom line for me is that I'd rather spend money on a cheap @ss car and use the extra to surf somewhere radder than Oregon or to buy boards with. Elements are for transplants or people that want to look like surfers without actually having to spend time surfing.

And when you're in the water...
The locals will hassle you...

Wow erzats, generlizations much. I would hope that your enjoying yourself and not just spouting off. Saying things like that makes you look more like an @ss than me driving my element.
Doc... thats funny.

I won't take offense to Erzats, even if I drove an element(not mine) to go surfing yesterday. I didn't like em at first but, from a practical standpoint, they aren't bad.

yeah, just like a mini van... plus, mini vans are ironic enough, now. just kick in some of the doors and your off to the races. extreme cheapness and some 4 wheel drive models.

amen wanty...as for the element...well...i'll try to keep this brief.

"Elements are for transplants or people that want to look like surfers without actually having to spend time surfing."

i am:
-transplant from east coast, been here for 15 years
-living more in the valley than coast-so its more important to look the surfer part than the fact that i surf 80-100 days a year (in my element)
-total douche bag (actually 97% of the time) (but i have fun anyways)
-sold on the element and its xtra comfy long drive, plenty o room, reliability, versatility, etc for surfing

so, yea, erzats is right...

"cheap @ss car and use the extra to surf somewhere radder than Oregon"
-not that this advice is all bad but i must say that i have friends with cheap @ss cars, they break down. alot. i've seen it. sometimes not in oregon. while on surf trips. while the surf is good. but they have to mess with their car or even one time buy a plane ticket to get back to work on time all the while getting ripped off by some podunk mechanic instead of surfing. i am so thankful to be able to have and surf/sleep/stay in my reliable element. no campsite needed.

judging people based on their car is the real douche bag indicator for me though,
plus why waste your breath when i'm sure you have plenty to say about the board they are riding too.

Gee, people are sensitive about their elements. How come Doc gets off? Brevity? Strategic ellipsis? Humor? Do tell you Element drivers you!

Just for fun I googled "honda element douche bag" and I hit this:

Urban Dictionary entry for Douche Box (granted it's the number 7 entry)

7. Douche Box 3 up, 5 down love it hate it

(1) A car packed full with douche bags

or

(2)A boxy vehicle such as a Honda Element or Scion xB.
(1) "Let's pass this douche box!"

(2) "I can't believe people actually drive those douche boxes. Everytime I see one I expect toast to pop up from the roof."

look, i get it, they look ridiculous...

i thought so too for a while driving it but i just dont care anymore. it has endeared me to the point of defensiveness over the years despites its silly look by functioning so well.

my two rear seats live in my carport, in plastic, the back is a flat mem foam mattress bed + overhead 2-3 board inside storage, plus racks and room for drawers, inverter and hotplate. its my mini rv.

and after 100,000 miles it smells decent despite me.

Erzats,
Not mad about you hating on elements. I didn't like them at all until I drove one. And I could care less if someone doesn't like a vehicle. As I said before, claiming that people who drive them are douche bags is assuming a little much.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I have a newer car, but my wifes is a failing '93 Taurus on it's last leg. I hate car shopping and car salesmen.
