Do you like airs in surfing?

Postby clint jones » Tue Nov 13, 2007 10:38 am

I generally don't think airs in surfing look good. It looks like a lot of flailing around and few have style. And even fewer land them and surf away. I can see where others think it's the ultimate. There's exceptions of course, but I'd much rather watch somebody rip a cutback or pull into a barrel.

What's your thoughts on airing it out?

I do but I think there is a long way to go. Still a lot of bad airs and lots of bails. It won't be long before they become a lot more fluid and tweaked. When I was in Tofino I saw Pete Deveries, linking airs. Air, a couple of fluid pumps, air, couple of fluid pumps... very impressive and flowing. Done right, with style airs are just as good to watch as a floater or vertical turn.

Some people see trying 'tricks' as a waste of a wave. I suppose it all depends on what you want to achieve in surfing and if you want to see it 'progres.' Waves are natural launch ramps. I'm probably too over the hill to ever get airs dialed but I hope to land one or two before arthritis sets in.

when i see the lip coming over in front of me and I know it's gonna close out
i like to climb real fast to the top of the wave and then jump as high and hard as i can at the last second, and as the wave falls over it's like you gain double height. I like to jump in the kookiest kid-trampoline style possible, landing head first, like a poorly executed back flip.
i have had the board drag me back down into the wave countless times because of this, i have almost landed on the fin or been brained by the board as a result too. i still like it.
i dont believe anyone is positively impressed or even approves. that is part of the fun.

I like the linked airs. The big rodeos out the back or into white wash are a little gay. I remember my snowboard friends practicing tricks like that with their snowboards on a trampoline during the summer. Also gay. When they pulled one off a kicker the next winter I felt gay, as in real happy for those friends becuase it was sick.

When I was a kid the only air manuever available was the "flying kick-out". Most of the air manuevers I've seen attempted should have been aborted, and the "flying kick-out" attempted instead.

I do not think it is real attractive, however I am still stuck in the 80's.

I do apreciate those that can do them.

whoa, being able to fart so hard that it literally gives you air while your riding a wave.......sweet...
while coming back up from a bottom turn you can have one all ready so that when you hit the lip you can send yourself off high into the sky and leave a gruesome trail of pure concentrated nastyness behind you........

i better not let pra read this, he will get ideas

That makes me wonder if anyone has taken a leak while riding? Perhaps somewhere tropical, people make a little tube of their own while getting tubed.
If no one has before, then I want that move named after me. After I pull it off, billabong is going to forget all about Jordy and wussy sushirolls; watch.
