Help Send Me To The Atlantic Gyre

Postby Lil' Snowy Plover » Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:50 am

Hey OSP:

As many of you know, I've been working on marine debris issues, especially plastic in our oceans for the past couple of years. I've been invited to be part of a research mission to study The Atlantic Gyre, one of the four other patches on earth that collects plastic debris. But I need to raise money for the voyage. Please click the link if you have time, donate, and spread the word. This area of the ocean has never been studied before. I'll be sharing my trip on the OSP, blogging on the Huffington Post and various other sites. If you pledge, and you're a teacher, I'd be happy to come present to your class afterwards. Or your work, or whatever. Please help! I'll do presentations at Cleanline, Coldwater, Canon Beach Surf, Gorge, Ollie's, Lincoln City Surf, you name it.

Thanks Dub, I know it's a long shot here, but I'm extremely passionate about this subject and have the media channels to really build a big message from this voyage. Being deep in the issue, I see the rate by which this crap is accumulating, and swear that it would even give Wilbur pause. It's a grassroots funding strategy, and I'd like to go there backed by my peers, surf homies, journalist friends, and overall partners in crime.

Don't waste your money LP! Just bust out a few pictures of the inside of my van and make a collage. If that's not enough destruction for you, snap a few of Gaz truck. Then come to Sporties and tell of your shock and awe.

Problem solved and you owe me a beer.

I resent the implications of that statement.
As if by the nature of you being more plugged into this issue it some how means sharply less to me.

Maybe there is a misunderstanding that I somehow do not care about the environment as much as I ought to.

What an unfortunate perception.

Good luck to you and to your efforts.

I would contribute but I just bought a two stroke leaf blower so I am a little strapped right now.

Wilbur, no offense meant at all, but you're kind of the guy on OSP that people make jokes about with this kind of stuff-- and thus I was jut keeping with tradition to bring a little levity to my plea. I PM'ed you a more detailed description of the voyage. The minimum pledge is only $20 and it will go a long way to helping me realize this dream.
