SUNDAY, December 6th, 2009

**WARNING: The National Weather Service is issuing high surf warnings to local residents.
In the interest of public safety, the Civil Defense may close beach accesses along the North Shore of Oahu from Sunday night. The safest place to be is away from coastal areas. Avoid traffic and hazards by watching the event live when it goes at quiksilver.com/eddie.

The swell along the North Shore has made a strong and steady rise this-evening. Organizers are monitoring the conditions closely.

Contest Director George Downing has issued the following:
50% chance of running tomorrow, Monday December 7.
80% chance of running Tuesday, December 8.

An update will be issued at 7am Hawaii time Monday morning.

Looks like they called off Mav's for now so not to conflict with the Ed.

The bay buoy has dropped to 13.5 @ 17, but the outer buoys are holding at 18 -20. Will it go? We'll find out soon.

The Eddie

Postby Paul Dresman » Tue Dec 08, 2009 8:09 pm

One of the perks about being old and retired is you can waste any day any way you like, and I definitely did it today by watching the entire Eddie Aikau on the screen.

This was amazing. The surfers exhibited the highest levels of ability and courage. Slater and B. Irons and Garcia exeelled as well as many others.

As far as I'm concerned, no other sport even comes close to this event. Its infrequency--due to the rarest concordances of the natural world and its spirit, due to Hawai'i and the mana of Waimea Valley and Bay as well as the family of its guiding spirit--create a paradigm that other physical endeavors can never equal.

A cliche about this contest is that Eddie Aikau chooses the winner by the waves that are sent. But it is true. The last heat in the day produced the greatest waves--as if ordained--and the winner Greg Long emerged as well as the winner of the biggest drop, the Chilean Ramon Navarro.

Beethoven never put together a better symphony. (But George Downing did.)

A fearfully perfect symmetry.

Paul,
Yeah, what you said. It's amazing how you can embrace the spririt from several hundred miles away.
You can't appreciate that place until you've looked up at the church tower from the water.
It was cool to see Peter Mel take the early lead, only to be surpassed by the insane Slater bomb.
Then along the way, you see the legends: Clyde Aikua, Ross Clark Jones, Keone Downing, with a few Flea wipeouts thrown in for good measure.
Then the final heat comes; Slater looks like a lock, but Sunny is threatening only to be buried by a late Greg Long victory.
You can't beat this, another name honoring our hero.
Mana for sure. Thanks Eddie!

I watched most of it too but didn't think Long should have got 100 for just a drop.
You should have some semblance of actually making a wave to get scored that high....IMHO.

Take care.

Those photos are awesome, it is nice to see a different perspective than the webcast which made the wave look mushier than the water shots. I wish the swell had held off for another week and I would have seen it from the beach but stoked to have had the chance to watch it live from home.
