Longboarder Leash-Style

Why do most longboarders wear their leash just below the knee? Is it because a much larger board would tug that much harder on the ankle? I have surfed for years (shortboards) and never even bothered to know why until now.

Thanks for the responses from both the street and the aged sages.

I've been on a leash kick lately...
Something about a 20 minute swim...
Has less appeal October to April...
Than May to September...
Although tomorrow has leash-free potential.

Yes, tomorrow does have leash-less possibilities.

months dry, off the couch, on a head+ day, i've been known to go leashless. I've also been known to swim for my board as it gets pummeled against the rocks, too. I've also been known to get sucked out in a rivermouth, ruin a brand new board (2x) and to surf spots others wouldn't dare. I also eschew the use of booties and gloves...

maybe if I got a leash and booties, and went to known spots with friends I'd surf more?

I like to wrap my leash around the bedpost, but that's a whole other forum

Speelyei...
What are you doing tomorrow? Lets grab a leash, some booties, and head someplace where we see some other surfers for a surf? I'm game.

Howdy Moe! Sorry I missed your offer, and the good surf! Maybe one evening this week?
