How Many?

Postby McDing » Thu Mar 18, 2010 8:43 pm

So I met to post this a couple of weeks back; but the Corona in the keyboard left my notebook typing endless EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE's. So I am up and running again
. What I was wondering and the question I pose to all of you "kahunas" "kooks" and "Gremmies" is; How many Quads, Twins or Single-Fins did you see "bustin' air" in the most recent issue of Surfing or Surfer??? Just curious about your observations/

Not many. There is a great photo somewhere of Santa Cruz pro Kevin Reed (?) bustin' air at the Lane in the late 80s/early 80s on a single fin. And Larry launched a few on twins and quads around the same time.

But yeah, thrusters are still filling up the mags of course. I noticed, Slater has five fin plugs in a lot of his boards these days but, again, usually set up as tris not quads.

I guess what prompted my question was that I recently picked up the Feb. or March issue and I didn't see a single fin, quad or twin anywhere in the magazine. I will preface that statement by saying that the photos I observed were of boards in which the fin configuration could be identified. Gaz---I understand where you are coming from with regard to the two previously mentioned "mags". I actually bought this particular issue to check out the add for Hyperflex and for that reason alone. But after looking thru the mag I realized everyone is still riding thrusters. I guess Thrusters are the new "retro". Thank you Simon Anderson.

Mr McDing, it's simple (outside of a few). Skaters want to skate a wave, snowboarders want to shred (till someone is dead) a wave, and the rest of us are ok with the traditional 1 or 3 depending on length. Can't speak to gremmies as I am to old to know, but they do as told. Maybe we need to spend more time teaching? That's my goal.
