What is the point to having a panel of judges telling everyone who is better then the next?

Winning money? Seems pretty obvious. Unless there are no prizes, then it's all for the ego and nothing else.

Prize of any kind. Could be money, trophy, gear, beer.
Bragging rights.
Social and community gathering.
Competing against your peers to see how you stack up.
Another reason to drink beer.

Just to name a few.

I personally don't like man on man competition.
I prefer it to be co-ed.

Watching "Busting Down the Door," the one Aussie dude said that the reason they started the ASP was so they didn't have to go back to reality and work, just surf 'professionally'.

I'm with ya though, contests are lameazhit, especially ones aired on the first thirteen channels of TV.
The only acceptable reason to have a contest, is as an excuse to party.
