etiquette question

Here is the scenario I have ran into a few times. You can count on one hand the number of times I've surfed. I just need to get solid on standing up so I usually just ride the beach break and I always find a point where no one in on the outside of me. I'm not too picky on the waves at this point but a few time the people on the outside move behind me because it seem to pick up there (I pick a landmark on the beach so I know I'm not moving in front of them just to be clear). They are not even getting close to me because the waves are no longer big enough unless they ride all the way in. I just wondered if it was bad etiquette to ride in front even if I was there first and for the most part wasn't in the way anyway.

I know I'm a kook but I love being in the water and just want to be polite, but at the same time get better.

The prevailing rule here is that people will always moves towards you no matter how hard you try to surf by yourself. It's like protons and neutrons. Cosmic debris. As a kook, who is trying your best to stay away from experienced surfers, you are under no obligation to get out of their way. There is also a rule that states you have to be able to kick these other surfers sessa collectively, otherwise you have to find another beach, preferably deserted.

Mostly I have been going to Otter Rock, where it seems like people will be more likely to tolerate beginners. I have also went to PC a couple times. And I actually find it a little easier to stay well out of the way there. But obviously the skill level of surfers there is higher. But like Riverjetty said...if you are catching waves it's only a matter of time until you have company. I was also going to check out Agate next time around as I have heard that is user friendly to kooks.

I'm pretty good at keeping track of my surrounding so I haven't had any close calls. But I know how clueless beginners can be so I want to educate myself and keep the peace.

I can't imagine anyone "beating down" anyone else at PC. It's very typical of Oregon as a whole, mostly passive aggressive. At what point does the machismo BS persona break down? Just surf, or not. Mind your own business.

Times have changed. Used to be at least a good mental beat down there handed to people if they got out of line.
