Under 6' Boards

Postby MC » Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:07 am

I'm curious as to how many of you are riding boards under 6'.

If you don't mind, I'd like to know your height and weight too.

I'm just asking because I'm dropping down to a 5'10 x 20 1/4 x 2 1/2 high performance-ish quad fish from a 6' x 21 1/4 x 2 5/8 classic-ish fish. I'm 6'2 and 185 lbs.

Just wondering what I'm in for. Psh, as if I don't already know. I'm already doing shoulder workouts.

I'm 5'11" 200 lbs. and I have a 5'10" "performance" quad fish with the same dimensions (a firewire).

Overall, the board is f'n rad, but I don't float well on it anymore (I was 180 when I bought it). When sitting on it, the water level is just below my nipples so I get cold surfing it up here. Paddling is a bit tougher, but it still planes quickly and catches waves well. It's a really fast and responsive board. With a thinner foil on a fish, you are trading buoyancy for speed.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the length. A fish will usually work better if it is under 6' anyway. Get a board with more width and thickness if you are worried about paddling or floatation.

5'11x21x2.5 fish

i'm 6'3 170lbs.

I rarely have to use a longboard in the summer. You'll be fine. What's the worst that can happen? You get in better shape?

The worst that can happen is that you miss/blow wave after wave after wave after wave after wave after crappy-hardly-worth-surfing-wave.

Get the board, then drive past miles of empty hollow open beach break and take it to a a small crowded longboard wave.

Then bitch about the longboarders taking all the waves.

I'm riding a 5'10 x 19.5" x 2.375 thruster fish shape, and a 6'0 x 18.75 x 2.375. I'm about 6'1 175 lbs. Girth means more than length when it comes to short boards (insert dirty joke here.)

oh. and i don't get frustrated watching longboarders catch waves at all. longboarding is a riot. i just prefer to shortboard 75% of the time. i'm not looking for this to replace a longboard at all. the thing is going to be a pretty high performance little rocket. probably needs a bit of juice. therefore, i won't be struggling to surf it on any mushy longboard waves. i've got another board for that stuff.

I am 6'0" and weigh 172 marvelous lbs.

I have a 5'10" x 21 x 2.75" speed dialer...and used to have a 5"10 x 20.5 x 2.5" POD (now a 6'0" Bug). No problem paddling them, no problem catching waves, no problem burning hippy schlong boarders if they get too greedy. I do own a LB too though because all boards are fun and have their moments.
