OK the misic is good but they stop the song about when I'm getting into it. A litle hokey. but it gives you a good idea of what a downwinder is like - anyway about the best vid I have seen on this stuff. I'm addicted....

That is one of the main benefits of open ocean paddling - no BS wave greed crap. You leave the lineup politics behind.

Mine is basically a 12'er not racy but more surf shaped, could be a blast tho' on a short run.

Man you guys are jaded. That would truly be a child of neptune that could ride a single wave in a 20' ground swell from Hawaii to Cortes Banks.

The board is pretty crucial to your enjoyment. 14' to 18' seems to be the direction things are going. The difference in glide and speed on those big boards is pretty amazing.

Isn't that where a sea kayak starts to make more sense than a surfboard?

Whoa whoa whoa, sea kayaks and surf kayaks are not in the same league. And really, just how much beer/wine/whiskey can you carry from point A to point B with your downwinder? Just seems that if you have 18' of craft, you may as well have some cargo capacity.

Sitting or laying down is gay...it just is. A properly outfitted SUP board should have room for a wet bar for your A to B voyage. These two guys have the right idea - note the room on the nose for the TV, maybe even a small refridgerator.

did I say sitting was gay?
