While I somewhat inexperienced in duckdiving 20' waves...
I have had my board removed from my grasp by much smaller ones...
Or perhaps he didn't want to say:
“I had traveled beyond the reef about 200 yards by ditching my board and diving beneath several waves about 20 feet high..."
In which case the board would act a lure.

It happened to me.
No really...

Singer Island Florida.

Paddling out to the 3rd reef.
Very low tide. As I passed the second reef my board got stuck on the reef momentarily...or so I thought.

After one wave outside I coudl tell something was wrong and turned the board over to examine the fins. I figured I must have messed a fin up on the shallow second reef.

Nope.

right there on the end of my pintail there was a nearly perfect bite mark. Not big, maybe 4-6" across.

I figured the shark took a swipe at my feet (a common instance in Florida) and got the tail of my board instead.

true story. Thogh it is not on the internet. Well...it is now I guess....

Same here! I was skirting a swell on the Chattooga River in N.C. and dropped the tail on my blue whale shaped float-ee for some directional drag when I suddenly was loosing air at a terrifying rate. Once I beached my float-ee on the banks I discoverd the tooth marks of Burt Reynolds
