It's cyclical - I think some people get stoked for a few years and (for valley/Portland people) the drive and wave quality saps the motivation.

Not a bad idea. Buddy of mine sold his house in a trendy Ptown hood and bought outright in Baker City. Now living mortgage free and enjoying an outdoor lifestyle similar to what you'd find in Bend without all the yuppies in puffys.
