Why aren't more surfers gay?

Read the post....seemed like a lot of different themes all jammed together including out surfers, surfer prostitution and where to hook up if at all. I never got the writers main point. I am not sure if any sport has reached that point of full coming out.

Well this is an interesting topic - first off, the Stab writer is kind of a hack so it's hard to take anything away from it. 2nd, I agree with Tex here, most sports (I cringe to call surfing a sport) are fairly homophobic, passively at least. Add to that the fact the lineup can be such a middle-school-esque, Lord of the Flies free for all that it doesn't surprise me in the least that you don't see any rainbow-flag-plastered logs out, especially here in Oregon. The lumberjack-redneck-Orebilly surfers still outnumber the hipsters most days.

Why aren't more NFL players gay? Why aren't more MLB players gay? Why aren't more golfers gay? Is there any sport that has more openly gay players than the rest? Not sure...but figure it is only a matter of time as society and culture become more open and accepting about it. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I love when hetero dudes feel awkward cause they're forced to deal with the fact that some dudes enjoy screwing with other dudes. If you look at the predictably awful comment section, there's a lot of squirming bigots attempting to preserve their world view of normal=good, different=bad. Po' wittle snowflakes can't handle it. Didn't think the article was well written either but at least it was a cursory attempt to be well informed. Which is unfortunately above standard in surfing media.

Yeah there's always going to be bigots and homophobes - American/Western society in general has come a long way in a short time (save for recent setbacks, but I'll stay out of the political crap here,) yet there's still a long ways to go.
