What Makes a Good Surfer/ surfing?

Postby Spent » Fri Jun 08, 2018 8:13 am

I have my favorites, Curren and Dane. I also like Mason Ho a lot. But mostly, I tend not to pay too much attention to Pro surfing. Despite how well the top guys surfs not much really moves me.

Anyway, saw this clip and was really impressed but can't really put my finger on why? Beefier lad, gorilla arms, i don't know but its a rad and refreshing display of power and individual style...

Dig how emotive the clip is-- we can see his response to each part of the wave and how he moves with it, progressing toward the aerial.

All the WW's were great. Runman69 another great one from that period.

Really dig Burch and his surfing. His part in the last Volcom vid was redic. I posted in another thread.

Danes a blast to watch too.

Timmy Reyes cause I've seen him up close and in person shredding Oregon. Dude charges some crazy shite up here in the winter too.

Tony Perez. Local OR native who kills it, but is humble and doesn't get all vibey like a lot of the north coast transplants from Cali do.

Riding oversized boards, getting every wave and going down the line without a turn.

Heard a really interesting perspective about style recently, visualizing it as "the space between the notes" or how a surfer carries themselves between maneuvers. Good style, in this sense, would be the fluidity and precision between the steps of the dance. Gleaned this from an interview with Donald Brink-- fascinating guy for sure.

Missed the Nathan Fletcher Heavy Water flick at Lloyd last week. Odd location and just couldn't put it together as I am spending less and less time in town, but looks like a good one.
