Thanks for hashing that out, Spent. I’ll have to dig up some more TC footage to get jazzed on. I can see what you’re getting at though and the stylistic link nails it. Gonz’s lines have a similar quality. There’s something transcendent about watching them too— more spirit than sport with these rippers. Watching Tony Hawk or Kelly Slater is like observing pure technique and method, whereas these guys seem to capture that intuitive wild style dialed into perfection. Looks very much like joy to me.

As a kid, Curren was my hero....fav surfer. Watching Jerry Lopez in Indo is a close second.

OK, Gonz/Curren: Same trip... But now I'm wondering who the Tom Penny of surfing is? The stonedest, smoothest style king whose effortlessness is only matched by his evasiveness?

Penny brings back some memories to younger days and younger bones. Maybe Dane?

Randomly crossed paths with the Gonz downtown this past summer. That was cool.

YES-- Dane Reynolds' hangtime really jives with those perfect f/s flips Penny imprinted on my memory so long ago. Very appropriate for so many reasons too.

Looking back on skating in the 90's is kind of crazy-- skate vids were an "event" and a luxury when it came to the likes of TP. I think throughout that decade, I saw maybe 10 minutes of Penny footage, mostly from SPoT, and every moment was fully realized skateboarding.

Kind of a similar feeling when Dane graces us with a a clip these days.

Lotta Penny spots on the 411 video magazine series, which I really loved. #2 comes to mind and prolly where I 1st saw his skating. Here's a little hack I found the Tuuuube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADvJRaTYPbU

411 was the jam-- I have a ton of those old tapes in storage somewhere.

BTW what's up with running into Gonz in PDX? Was he skating or painting or talking to a fire hydrant? Seems like a really random (and awesome) encounter...

Was on my way to work zipping on 2nd Ave. Actually think I had a dentist appointment that morning because I don't normally go that way. Anyways was stopped at a light doing the ole balancing act so I didn't have to clip out, looked up, and Gonzs mug was right in front of me. We looked each other in the eyes and was like I know that guy. Seconds later my brain processed it and was like that's the Gonz! Light changed and as I rode off, I yelled out GOOOONZ! Later saw he was in town doing some Adidas event at the indoor skate park they have. Made my day even though he was just walking and not ripping on a skate.

That's so random! Reminds me of a feeling I once had about PDX, a feeling that anything can happen. Maybe RIP City has some juice left after all...

Far away from the ruins of the once-mighty OSP, Spent, now presumably free to state his opinions without fear of retribution, weighed in on the Tom Penny of surfing. He suggested Joel Tudor citing, "Economy of movement. Maximum style". Solid rationale. He adds, "Tudor can also charge pipe if he wants. Penny can destroy vert. I saw it firsthand".
