Locals Only

I went to Powell's on Sunday to see if I could scoop the latest Surfer with the AK cover. It was not there but the old edition was still on the racks. Cold water surfing and locals and sponging were the main topics. The Locals story was compelling in that they actually got a guy from Seaside Point to talk. The interviewer committed to never giving away the spot and then the interviewer gave it away in grand fashion. They interviewed a guy from a CA spot and his end conclusion was that he mostly had regrets for being such a dick and rarely even surfs there anymore. Seems enforcing locals only is such a committment to being a downer, especially when surfing can deliver so much joy, done respectfully of course.

You are a saint....saved that poor soul from having his entire surf career ending that day.

It was actually hilarious because the surf journo referenced the story everyone knows about the pros bringing skis through OR and what the locs did to those guys. Like no one knew that ever happened ;)

Old news...... suprised Surfer mag is still going, at least the monthly print version. I have over 10 years from 90s to mid 2000's in my basement. Not sure why but I do.

Do you have the one with Yakutat on the cover? That is still my fav issue of all time. The current version has a story of Josh Mulcoy getting some in Canada....but the journo got skunked by a day.

We were up in the SOJD last winter. We had local access to a beach that required surfers to not walk on the beach. This guy comes prancing down the beach and gets chewed out by one of the old hags that always patrols. The dude paddles out to the line up and is talking shite about her. He is talking about how lame she is....while he is breaking the rules, (we had to kayak out to the point) and I absolutely went off on him for not respecting the rules of the place. I just snapped. Its not easy getting there and we had to anchor off the beach and my buddy lives just two houses down from that old enforcer, she has actually yelled at his daughters for walking her property. Long story short, I am rarely in a place to claim local status, in fact there is really just that one spot up in WA. But I felt like shite afterwards, I certainly did not surf any better. Still, minimum expectation is that surfers just follow posted rules about property access.

Damn...I would have totally gone to that. Wow, I had no idea, it would have been great to have my sons experience that first hand. Spent a ton of nights on that beach....good times.

Well we all need a little “healing”. Especially with all that f#=%***ing drumming. Just as easy to boat into the Ranch and Surf perfect waves. And I have done that many times. The only drumming being a steady swell on the reef at Cojo or Drakes.
