Ridiculously Named Wave Pool Coming to Washington?

Postby Howly Wolf » Mon Jun 07, 2021 9:24 am

Apparently a wave pool is in the works for Yakima, WA. If all goes according to plan, they aim to open in 2024. They're using WaveGarden Cove technology, which I definitely want to check it out. But the name... the name is horrible. Seems the park's going to be booze themed due to the PNW microbrew culture and local hops industry, so they're calling it, uh, Barreled Surf Park.

Equal parts pass out and puke with that name right there, so I guess the booze theme is hitting the ground running.

Or maybe I'm just too sober these days? Beyond the wave, none of this scene sounds very appealing, but that's par for the course for me. It will be a smash for the PDX/Seattle puffy jacket crowd tho.

Interesting. Eastern Washington surf scene is blowing up  This just opened opend:

My buddy from Bend an avid river surfer, river board basement shaper, and local fixture at the wave there got invited to be one of the first groups to surf it. Seen some of his footy. Also I guess some of the Santa Cruz guys went as well. Standing wave, looks tricky, would maybe check it out.

This may be the final straw that sends Tex back to his native Warshington.

I MEAN....I'll def check it. I was prowling on FB- killed my account 10 years ago but it said it took them 5 years to find that location. Shiiiiiit. Honestly, I want to build one and I am a little jealous. We will see if it gets passed and they can get it built. We should all road trip up there and hit it.

Eastern Washington is beautiful and still untapped IMO. Like several people I know, who went remote with their jobs, an old coworker of mine bailed out of PDX and moved to Wenatchee. He's lovin it. Said its cheap and a cool little zone with great recreational activities. I really need to explore that zone more.

Good luck permitting anything or trying to operate a wave pool anywhere in the City of Portland. Politics, taxes, money grabs, and overall BDS BS would make it nearly impossible. If there was a wave pool to pop in Oregon, my guess would be somewhere in Central Oregon. Maybe Yamhill County if you wanted to tap a Portland metro market? I've worked on tons of landuse and environmental permitting projects over the last 2 decades. Not my gig anymore, but would of been interesting to work on a wave pool site.

Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde might want to look into this whole wave pool thing. Seems they'd have the money, land, permitting clout, and infrastructure to make it happen. Reasonable distance from PDX, Salem, Eugene, and the coast as well. Of course, the whole Cascadia Subduction Zone thing remains an issue... wonder how much to earthquake proof/insure a wavepool with that reality looming?

If Yakima becomes a reality, I'll happily be the designated driver for the OSP shuttle.

That is the best name for a surf park in Eastern WA. I love it...

Maybe I'll appreciate it more in 50 years when Barrelled Surf Park hits Salton Sea status-- a grody contraption dormant upon the blighted landscape. Stagnant water, piss yellow. Skeletons of carp and perch line a mocking shore. Holdouts of the glory days, retired in trailers half-insane from the relentless sun, their leathered skin reeking of pruno. The jewel of Yakima Valley, now an empty shell long forgotten as more accessible wave pools came online. As profits sank, the park changed hands so many times that it's once welcoming ambiance warped into a confusion of accursed imagery that in hindsight seems more a celebration of Manifest Destiny than a hops industry long past its prime. Seamless upon this despairing plain, derelict but unyielding, Barrelled has finally met the promise of Eastern Washington..

Just like the PNW skateparks rolled out, a little to late for my old @ss, so will the wave pools.

Too old? No way! The wave pool revolution is geared especially for the midlife man! The entire endeavor is premised on scheduling a goodish 4'-6' session at your convenience. Beginner, intermediate, or advanced waves at the turn of a dial. No concern for dodging board-ditching kooks or scrapping with hot shots. Pool-specific surfboards will even offer the opportunity for ego-stroke on a sub-6 with no regard for paddle-ability or those stubborn covid lbs that just won't go away. Sure, the pools will also be training ground for groms to innovate & perfect progressive maneuvers (anyone see that kid's backside front flip?) but you get to trip on the action while tying one off on the patio of an on-site brewery. Core!
