I know it is a lost cause but when did it go downhill? Late 90s? Earlier? ES II? When did Men's Health start featuring surfing?
Lawyers have been surfing for 20 years now. Can they go skiing instead? There's some snow up the hill...

The lifestyle has definitely been commoditized, we have a nice little PDX "surf shop" that I will not name here to prove that point. Seriously, they were trying to sell flannels for $150 bucks. Anyway, Howly is right, everyone is trying to make a buck on waves, either though the clothes, the boards, the suits, the pools, the fins, the leashes, the board bags, the wax, the e-bikes, the racks, the watches, the coffee mugs, the mags, the vids....etc. It all adds up to a massive level of Bourgeoise.

I left California once you couldn't camp for free near the surf (long time ago)...
Lost my last north coast secret spot campsite overlooking the water (someone built a mansion)...
Had to camp miles inland on logging roads (the horror)...
Probably time to move on (target date Oct 2023).

In the late 90s on the central coast the local guys I surfed with were mostly blue collar, yeah there were a few science types working for EPA and ODF in Yaquina. But otherwise teacher, contractor, tile guy, window washer, framer, waiter, weed grower and the guys that came over from the valley were pretty hardcore and could surf well for the most part. The grits still there when you surf outside of the usuals. Same crusty charters, with some new additions. Or maybe park in the locals lot and hang by the fire for a few beers?
