Oregon Surf Shops Past and Present

Postby Tex » Fri Jan 07, 2022 10:07 am

Just an attempt to fire up the ol memory machine.

The first surf shop in the NW I ever went to was Cleanline Seaside. That was probably in 1984. Josh was the man and always made me and my brothers feel right at home. I usually bought all my ripcurl suits from him.

Ricky Young Surf Shop in Bellevue, WA was my go to in WA. Loved talking story with Ricky and he shaped me a nice custom back in 97.

Gorge has been super convenient and I like the owners, now I buy most of my stuff from them.

Cleanline Cannon is where I pick up wax if needed.

I dont see there being a big enough market in PDX for another shop, but if I were independently wealthy, I would probably open my own just for shits and giggles.

Mrs. A's was the 1st Oregon surf shop. It was in Portland and as much as the coasties complain about Portlanders this and that, Portland and Portland surfers were a big part of Oregon's surf history. Off course PDX is no where near the same town it was then, but something to note.

Finger was a good dude. I liked to get my wetsuits through his shop Cold Water in Astoria.

I used to try to support Oregon surf shops as much as possible and I have bought boards and wetsuits from Gorge, Seaside Surf, Cleanline, Oregon Surf shop (RIP)

These days, I don't really go to surf shops much but when I do its mostly Seaside Surf Shop. Purchased two boards from Dennis last year.
Pink Floyd and Single Fin Logs.

Pretty much same. Try to go local shops 1st. Whatever shop has or is getting rubber and shapes I am looking for. I typically order my customs from non-local shapers through the local shops getting in on shop orders. Currently have a custom on order via Pura Vida there at Otter. I assume this helps the local shops and saves me on shipping. Gorge always has a stacked inventory of stock boards from the big name shapers even through Covid when the smaller coast shops had next to nothing. I bought my last off the rack Lost there pre Rona, but for wax and other supplies it's kinda hard to get to from NE and easier to hit shops over at the coast as I am there weekly on average. I do get all my snow sleds tuned and fixed there outside of basic waxing. They do good work. I've grabbed wax, dewaxing Pickles, and beer at Up North as its pretty convenient on my way to the freeway, but they operate during bar hours. Picked up a pair of Docs at Seaside Surf recently and board inventory is off the hook rn esp if you’re a Lost fanboy. Been an O'Neil guy last decade prob and have gotten them from Cleanline and Moment. More recently stuff is so hard to find, I had to call Evo in Seattle and get someone to literally grab the last L 5.5/4 Hyperfreak off the floor and send it to me. Evo would not me my 1st choice for surf, but I looked everywhere and was the last Med in the PNW as far as I could see. Was set on the 2mill Xcel comp gloves thinking it might be the perfect medium between the 1.5 paper thins and the bulky 3s and a small shop in Joysey was the only option. Just the way its gone recently.

Remember ASD in SE I think they were there on SE Clay? Cool Mexican body boarder worked there I'd run into at Westport when bars where still there in Half Moon Bay (RIP) I used to get wax and whatever there when I lived off of SE Madison for a blip. Scored a beaut of a Rawson 6'8" step there when they were closing for like 4 bills. Epic board I snapped at the infamous back when I was chargin a little harder in like 06 or 07. I think that's about when they shut.

Raven Surf Shop in Seaside with boards built by Florida Phil.
Circa 1978. Short-lived.
