My only problem with being in the tribe is that that tribes get reservations delegated by the government and usually the land and water is pretty shitey. What if our surf tribe got a swatch of the mohave?

....and so another thread degrades into the faultline...oh well...

Oh...Saigon...a simple "yes" would have sufficed. You are not to the tribe as Bluesilver is not to homosexualtiy.

Okay, I'm kindda stoned so if none of this makes any sense...
blame the weed!

it's not just the waves...

it's the sunsets that we've shared
the campfires, guitars and marshmallows
the laughter’s and the beers
the stories and the jokes

it's the daybreak dude
the one that always surf checks while we sleep
the morning coffee, muffin and dawn patrol
the unison yelps into the wet, cold suits

it's the places we've surfed together
the memories of traveling together
the seals we've talked about
the eagles we've paddled under

it's the road trips we planned together
the drives we've taken turns on
the bears and elks we saw along the way
the times we've had to pee in the bush

it's the ocean we love and respect
the waves we live to ride
the friends we make along the way
the life we are so fortunate to live

it's not you that chooses surfing
it's surfing that chooses you...

I voted yes but hesitate...

I thought I knew the tribe thing and was part of it, I've seen it in other lifestyle activities like climbing and it was part of the appeal of surfing to me before I started.
It wasn't until one day in Ticla Mexico when the idea of the surf tribe became clear to me and saw how removed from it I reall was.
Camped on the beach with me were families who had dedicated themselves completely to surfing. It was obvious that for generations it had been that way...everyone ripped, grandma, dad, sons and daughters. These were truely people of the sea. They spoke a language with other tribe families that I could hardly follow. Their license plates may have said California, rental, or even Texas but anyone could tell the ocean was their home. They were like gypsies and had the far off stare that told you they were on a different plane of reality.
So yeah, I guess in a sense I may be a part of some tribe because I go surfing on the weekends and travel summers but I can't help but think of Discovery Channel shows about primitive tribes....you know how they always have a guide, one that is from the tribe or lived with them for a while but is just back to visit, he's wearing jeans and facepaint...I kind feel like that guy, one foot in each world.

I prefer to think of it like the mafia. Once you're in, you never get out.

Bison - one foot in each world.. I can totally relate to that. Although, I'd really like to ditch one of them... but I get paid quite decently, have good benefits and am pretty much taken care of if anything goes wrong or when I retire, so as much as I want to ditch the one world.. I'm just either too much of a coward to do so or as some have said 'don't be stupid, you have a good job.. keep it' ... It's not even a fabulous job. It's okay.. The situation is a bit pathetic really... but ya.. One foot in each world... Torn for as long as I hold on to both...

Wilber - NEVEH! I am not moving away from the bong - it helps makes the one world somewhat enjoyable.. no, please.. please don't take may medication away from me.. I need it.. please... have compassion... NO.. NO FRIGIN WAY ARE YOU TAKING THE B BBBONG AWAY!! It's.. it's .. it's MY precious.. he wants to steals our preciouses from us.. must not let him takes our precious, please don't takes our precious... HE'S a thief. Take him down.. take him downs before he steals our precious!

i think of myself as halfway in as bison said . . . . but in a different since. I feel as though i only know part or half of the culture. My father grew up surfing in the 60's and through today. It has always been apart of his life. He has experienced every up and down of surfing . . . . he truly knows what it is to be part of this "tribe". My mother, on the other hand, has been landlocked her whole life . . . which led to me being raised halfway on the water, halfway out, as i cant say i have been in the water since i was born, because it would be a complete lie. . . so while i consider myself part of the tribe, im not 100 tribal surfer . . . but im not the guy that considers himself hardcore surfer just because he goes to cali/hawaii/insert name here once a year and rides white water.
"We'll get him when he comes back in!" . . . .
"He's not coming back."
