Closing time....

Postby Wilbur Kookmeyer » Mon Aug 14, 2006 8:09 pm

Do you knowingly take closeouts?

I mean all waves, well most anyway, are going to closeout at some point. In Oregon beach breaks, the ratio is even higher and sooner than later might I add.

So in essence we all take closeouts.

But I am talking about the ones that are going to close before you can even make a bottom turn.

Do you take closouts? Why?

I made that conscious decision this weekend past out of boredom. Was tempted to get like a 4 inch fin for the Ugly.

But mostly I take them because I suck at paddling, get sucked up and over I go.

I'll surf close outs as long as they have power and there's a chance that every once in a while one will let you through. Shorties a week and a half ago was a fine example. S swell pumping and 1/20 waves were makable. I just have more fun in steeper waves even if they aren't working quite as they should.

love takeing a few on the head if i can get a bit of a drop and some face time before the curtain.... recently compleated wathing seistas and olas for like the 10th time and the philosophy espoused by wegner concening closeouts has become a new driving force for me to surf everything.

I try to avioid obvious ones, but often there's no choice round here.

Who know's sometimes you could make it. Get a quick little shack, throw up a destrcto floter, or blast an air your never going to land.

Really I'd rather surf punchy close outs than weak waves that let you in, but barley give you any spead to do anythig. It's those waves that frustarte me.

depends on a few variables for me. where, how big, etc. There are a few places... and anything I deem as "big" (which varies with day, mood, weather), where I'll be looking left and right and if it starts to close I'll fade back on the board and let it WHOMP shut right under me as I spin around and head out further for safety...
sometimes it seems like you're sure to get barrelled if you can just pick the spot... Also, if I feel like I'm getting too bored, picky, or weak, I'll take a few on the head just to sharpen up a bit.

Yes,

If the majority of waves are close outs I will take them just to get the drop. If it is a mix of good waves and close outs, I try to hold out for the cleaner waves, though sometimes I just do not have the patience and end up taking the drop only to see the wave I was waiting for as I am paddling back out

Hell no. And i hate it when fools look at me like "why didnt you take that wave" Besides, you might be wasting your time on sh*t when a long clean wave rolls through. Sure, sometimes i make the mistake but generally I try and the ones that are gonna make me happy.

If the defintion is, you can't even get a bottom turn, then the answer is yes only if I'm cold. Sometimes if the surf is total crap and I'm in it, I'll look at more of exercise and do a lot of paddling and then duck diving and it's always good for me to practice my pops and try to get them just a smidgen better.

You mean you're supposed to stand up before the wave turns to whitewater?
