Stiffler--An apt question in the Oregon snow.
I was in Baja at Seven Sisters from after Xmas to over the New Year's. The last day I surfed there it was overhead at ** ******, and I got a couple of really long rides on walls that were simply superb--so much so I nearly overshot the end of the beach and had to cut back hard to avoid the rocks. I bet the next day at ******'* was really working, and that's a two-minute ride when it's on.
We camped at Punta *****, and I have to tell you that the poeple who camped there, as well as those at the next point north, were really special. Everyone was super friendly in the water and on land. Fish were caught and shared. Our New Year's Eve fire was a couple of big dead agave that roared on the sand.
I ran into a fellow I had met ten years ago there, when he was a new surfer and a student at Humboldt in Arcata. Now he's a Ph.D. candidate at Santa Cruz who counts albatross on the Guadlupe Island. A great reunion.
But best of all, I also ran into two of my crew, also from Santa Cruz, from last summer's surfing in Costa Rica. One of them, who fishes tuna on a boat out of Newport, Oregon, has just combined with two others to buy a five mile section of the Sisters. They are doing it to stop all development and keep it a nature preserve. Combining with Wild Coast, that just purchased Punta Lobos, they will effectively maintain the surfing in that area and keep it pristine. A big victory, amigos, by some really big-hearted people.
