FCS, Future, or Glassed on fins

Postby intrepid » Mon Jan 22, 2007 9:58 am

What is your preference for fins? Personally I prefer FCS over future fins. I kind of like glassed on fins, but I prefer to be able to change and experiment with different shapes/sizes.

4 Way Fin Systems (www.4wfs.com) should also be included there.

You will never really beat glass-ins for 'twang' and drive, but just to experiment with, 4wfs are way ahead of FCS in what you can do.
Ive only used fixed, fcs or 4wfs to date not counting centre line box fins.

I've only used glassed-on and futures. Just being able to switch out the fins changes makes it so much better. I went for so long not knowing the difference it made for each wave type. Now I can't go three sessions without some sort of switch.
The futures seem pretty solid and the shaper that made my board (schuler) seems pretty adamant about them. Although seeing an ad for FCS claiming that they're much lighter makes me wonder if fin weight is an issue.

can't beat glass ons. but if you want to mess around with diff fins and/or travel go with Futures.

FCS are crap IMO. main issue is that they don't sit flush with board.

LokBox look good also with the added benefit of adjustibility but again they don't always sit flush with the board.

I think boards ride better with fins.

I checked out the site for the 4 way fin system. They had some drawings of how it worked, but no pictures of it actually installed on boards. Interesting concept, I'd like to see one in real life. The site left me with some questions.

I have to part ways with the African.

Glass is my fav. Though busting them off sux @ss.

None of my boards have glased fins, however, my next one will.

there is something....sensual about the feel of them.

If you have a good shaper, then you cant beat Glassins' set for that board, period.

However, it is after this fact that removable fins come into the equasion.
For the traveling surfer, removable fin system is handier.

For me, just to mess about in different conditions and to have a favorite board you know well and you can tune in using the 4WFS setup is only a good thing.

I longboard, so most of my boards have 4WFS side fins and a centreline box.
The one with FCS side fins will be converted over to 4WFS when I get my finger out.
