They call them selves surfers now?

Postby Honey » Wed Jan 24, 2007 2:14 pm

I recently ran into a friend of an acquaintance who knows I surf. He apparently frequents Westport and asked if I could show him around the strait a little. He said he was a transplant from Hawaii and had been "surfing" for several years. I asked him the questions I always ask when confronted with a new surfing buddy opportunity: Do you bitch when you are cold, do you bitch about wanting to leave before others are ready, do you bitch when you get hurt or when it sucks?
Im always a little wary about surfing with new people, and especially wary about sharing our spots with more people who will share with more people eventually and so on. In cases like this I generally take them to 2 places only. So we get to the point in the conversation where he seems cool enough, and semi hot so I dont think Id mind seeing his towel slip in the parking lot.....I guess I will take him surfing and find out if he is a kook.

Then he drops the bomb. The B-word. Body boarder. Game over. I pretty much told him not only would I not risk being seen with him on the beach or in the water with him ever...let alone tell him about any new spots, but also how lame he is for calling himself a surfer at all.

What would you do? Would you bring a boogie/body/knee boarder (what ever) surfing with you?

Am I just really mean?

I think it's fun to dog on BB's a little but I don't take it seriously, though. One of my best buds is a bber, and we always have fun going out. Only waverider I know who could get a lit J out to the lineup.

If your worried about the scene thing stay away from BBers. If you just want to have fun and the bloke is cool, take him riding.

I dont care if he rips and its not about the "scene". I hate sharing waves already, but sharing waves with spongers is wasting waves.

Sponge worthy, classic Elaine.

I changed my whole aproach to this. I am not so much concerned with what someone rides as much as I am with how well they ride it.

I had a similar experience. I was kind of bummed when it turned out that she was a boogie boarder. I took her anyhow*. There is something hot about a woman that has her own wetsuit. She stayed on the inside and I stayed out and surfed as long as I wanted.

I don't really care what someone rides. I'm not elitist enough yet to tell someone I don't want to be around them because of what they ride.

*note: it was a well known spot.
