So what have you been reading, von Clausewitz?

If you enjoy that sort of thing you could show up there with a rude crew of fresh water kayakers.

Better yet, swing by the Beachcomber Bar during Rhody days and pick a fight with some 2 per center on an American made V-twin.

We're just joking on the few printed bits about the break that suggest that it's heavily localized.

Carl von Clausewitz, 'On War'

Postby montana » Tue May 20, 2008 12:26 pm

Carl von Clausewitz (Prussian) and Sun Tzu (Chinese) are probably the two military strategists most frequently quoted (misquoted?) in popular literature.

I didn't really think that you had been reading von Clausewitz, but if you had you might have been interested in his observation that all planning flies out the window once hostilities commence. Also noteworthy is the role misinformation (or misperception) plays in a fight (the fog of war), the tactical and strategic advantage of morality (a 'just' cause), and the asymmetry between defense (locals) and offense.

"You can't win" by Jack Black (not that Jack Black)

Favorite book of William S. Burroughs
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -- 'WOW, what a ride!!!'"

Its good isn't it Qball...

AK Press/Nabat did a whole series on 'outsiders, hobos, vagabonds, rebels and revolutionaries. 'You can't win' being the first...

Also worth checking out, in the series, are 'Sisters of the Road,' 'Out Of The Night' and 'Five Years in The Warsaw Ghetto.'

Yeah, Neck Deep, it's a much better read than I had anticipated since I'm not much of a Burroughs fan. Breezy, quick and interesting about a time long gone

Love this line: His eyes looked like they had been taken out, fried in a pan of oil, and put back in.
