Air Travel

Postby engiNERD » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:46 pm

-Looked into the Soma Airbag; can't seem to find any for purchase (both locally and online). Does anyone out there have any suggestions? I'm looking to take (2) boards down to Hawaii in a couple months.

I've seen a couple other companies out there - FCS, Creatures, ...- that make travel bags as well. Has anyone had any good luck with these travel bags?

Should I just box the boards with an excess amount of padding and call it good? Sounds a little sketchy to me!

Thanks in advance.

I've had the Dakine world traveler bag on over 16 flights now with no dings. still holding up good too. Just put some towels and cardboard around the nose/rails and cross your fingers for good luck too... I've heard some crazy stories about baggage handlers in Hawaii.

Flown alaska a couple times with surfboards, its only 50 bucks if you keep it under 50 Ibs, and they don't have a rule about charging per board, just per bag.

Good deal Alaska only charges $50. You can check with gorge perf (I'm assuming you are in the valley) they rent travel bags and I think they sell shipping boxes. I too have had a world traveler and they are pretty bulletproff and you have room for all your clothes. Don't need much here...

Nice. Sounds like I'll have to look into the World Traveler bag. Thanks for the heads up...
Renting a bag from GP doesn't sound all that bad either.

SooLoo - you're posted up down in HI right now? I'll be down there (Big Island) in Sept. Any guess on what the waves will be like? I'll be based out of Kona, but will probably have a car down there to go explore.

why use a bag when you can wrap the thing in pipe insulation and box it up in 1/4" plywood. 100% ding free travel.

Thanks SooLoo.

I do like the idea of using 1/4" plywood too. Sometimes those baggage handlers could use a splinter or two when "handling" the cargo.

Actually...
Sooloo just duct tapes his clothing around his boards...
I know...
I helped him tape up.
