going to Maui

going to Maui. Unbelieveable, huh? I can't quite believe it myself.

been before, actually, on my honeymoon. So here's what I want to know:
when I surfed there before, the inside of my thighs were hamburger within the first two days. 'Cause of the surfing in swimtrunks, not the honymoon. What can I do to toughen up ahead of time or avoid the rash this time?

also, I don't want to burn, but since it'll be November, my farmer tan will be long gone. I'm game to lather up with spf80 and look like casper the shiny ghost, but would tanning at a booth ahead of time be good? I mean, at least I could scam on the shallow pretty chicks that work there, right?

I'm gonna be off the couch and out of practice, so I think Puamana is gonna be more my speed than Ho'okipa. Thanks!

Not sure about the rash, but as a white guy from Oregon, I'm a huge fan of the long-sleeve rash guard to avoid the tropical burn. You can "bronze" on your way to and from the water and your surf time won't cut short by bubbles forming on your shoulders. I often take it one step further (maybe one step kookier too, but who cares) and wear a wetsuit vest over the rashie to give the rib-nubs a little cushion. Let's you surf longer, protects from the W, and gives you the option of going vest-only outside of peak sun hours, which is particularly awesome if you still have the farmers tan.

I have some advice for you, but Wilbur said it wasn't cool to post here. So, I put the advice on my wall in facebook.

Speelyie,

Stay away from the tanning beds, 90% sure that was how my little brother got melanoma.

Speel - go with a long sleeve rash guard and get some lycra shorts to ride under your boardies. Problem solved.

I thought that was just a blister from the sun.

I got so excited I ordered a new pair of Birdwell's Beach Britches. I also bought a new mask and snorkel. A year ago they found a Hellcat Bomber off Kihei in 35 feet of water, pretty excited to dive it.

I'm gonna take the advice for a long sleeve rash guard, too. Thanks.

Hey Sooloo, we'll be staying at Sugar Beach, in Kihei, arriving November 5th. I think we're gonna rent a car, too, so we'll be mobile. I'm thinking about taking a lesson on one of those 11' soft tops, just for laughs. It's probably not a bad idea actually... I can't remember the last time I got in the water!

Hey also, will a shop rent you a fiberglass board? Or am i gonna be stuck with a bic or a ST? My in-laws have some of those NSP longboards, but I have never really liked the feel of those boards much.

Stiff,
I don't know what's down south, but there are a couple of shops in Paia where you can probably find a polyester board.

As far as the original question, don't forget to put sunscreen on the back of your legs.
