what's just as f*cked are the comments such as 'cyclists should just stay out of the goddamn road.'

it is unbelievable how many americans (yes, it was americans commenting) think the road is for cars only and that if you ride in the road you some how deserve to end up dead like this...

i'm not one to settle a debate with violence but i'd probably end up swinging my U-lock in someone's face if i heard them spouting such sh*t.

I cycle, but when I'm driving and I have an idiot swerving back and forth on his bike and just not paying attantion..
I've seen many cyclers get hit becuase they thought they were too good to follow the laws of the road. I can't tell you how often I see them flying past everyone at a light and running a red without even looking to see if a car is coming. Complacent parcel delivery douche's

Of course, it's apparent that the bikers in the race were not at fault.

yes, and a simple apology for poor taste in your post would suffice.

Alright I'm sorry for my offense.
My sick sense of humor has gotten me through all kinds of sad and horrific things.
Sometimes I forget this isn't the firehouse post incident debrief where you get to joke about sick stuff you saw during your shift. Laughter is therapy.

I'll never understand, how when incidents like this go down, inevitably, it always comes back to how idiotic cyclists are....

It is true, there are possibly just as many idiots on bikes as there are in cars. However, when a cyclist makes a stupid decision/ bad mistake, it probably won't kill or harm you that much.

TO that end, why does everyone lop 'cyclists' into one group of like minded people, like they all follow the same code? All I see when I ride my bike is difference between myself and other riders. Just like when I'm driving a car. Douchebaggery comes in many forms, as evidenced by the comments of bluesilver.

I dont know. When Im stuck behind some self important spandex sporting jerk who is taking up the entire lane, causing back up for half a mile during ferry traffic when there is clearly a wide shoulder specially made for cyclists in our town...I have had to think twice a few times about slamming my passenger door open. I just let the horn and my foul trucker mouth do the work for me in those cases.

Im not saying this occurance was ok, this was obviously an event and the guy had no business behind the wheel. But maybe one of the reasons people are so stereotypical about cyclists suckingass is because we see it so much. I dont know what the laws are and frankly I dont care, I own a beach cruiser and only ride in parks because Im a poosy but, whats the big effing deal with staying on the shoulder when its there? Why force cars to pass in no passing zones on a 45mph road? Or in cases like me...why make some haggard old granny wench drive 10mph for 2 miles cause Im scared to pass....causeing all the other drivers to want to kill me rather then Bob the biker?

USE THE EFFING SHOULDER
The service here sucks.

Why are we of this mentality where cyclists should get out of the way? How about you wait and slow down for a bit? Exercise some patience and overtake safely when you can. There's really no hurry.

The automobile is such a physically, environmentally and sociologically destructive force, it needs to back the f*ck down for a time. Its had its day. Now's the time to be a humble driver.

There again, I live in Portland, where its not uncommon on some routes for bikes to out number cars and take over the whole road... and oh how glorious that feels.

Thats exactly what I do, I drive slow behind them...because I dont like passing people, Im a pretty safe driver these days. But, the difference between the guy riding his cycle 20 miles below the speed limit in the MIDDLE of the car lane, when there is a bike lane specifically made for his use, and me, is that I am driving my big honking car respectfully. I am not endangering others on the road intentionally.

Where I live, its 20 miles on fast moving country type roads to the nearest 'town'. Its a popular bike route from the west seattle terminal to Port Orchard. I love that about my area. For the most part the cyclists are respectful and make use of that lane provided them....but there is a handful of hollyer then though that seem to like putting the rest of us in danger. Explain that to me Neck, I understand the road is not just mine, and I dont treat it as such. But why is the cyclist permitted this very thing, and If I get pissed or impatient then I am the dick.

Honestly I rarely leave my house, crossing the county line is a novelty. I dont drive a hainess amount and when I do its normally a Safeboat. But If I do leave my place, its usually because of something like a Breathing apointment and you can sure as fuk bet Im not going to travel there via bike. Im taking the beast.

I'm not asking you to excuse the behavior of motorists who have nearly cost me my life, so don't expect me to explain the behavior of a cyclist who holds you up.

I drive also and I'm usually on my knees begging the planet and all its inhabitants for forgiveness each time I spark up the old internal combustion engine. Well, not really. I understand there is a time and a place for cars but the I still contend that the traffic system and layout of most American cities is way too autocentric.

Most car/ bike accidents do not end up with this charge. Here in Portland, at least, drivers are getting away with 'involuntary manslaughter' on a regular basis.
