commence tongue in cheek tags
No doubt but its better than being a priviliged white bourgeoise, riding up and down the mountain and 'shredding' over fragile eco-systems with a sense of entitlement, while being 'bound' to an over priced board mummy and daddy replace for you each xmas.
of course not all snowboarders fit this demographic...
just 90%.
i'd rather sponge and rollerblade.
end tongue in cheek tags

Always get a kick out of your hang up here cause you are white and you live in an all white middle class hood, but thats not the point I guess.
But I will say skateboards, esp the good ones arent cheap. And from my observations of skateboarding over the last of 28 years of doing so, has always been dominated by privleged white kids, the same ones on the mtn. Definately not like snowboarding, maybe say 75%. And while you do have a point some of us are trying to change that:

Cheap, good quality skates are easy to find. Any kid can get ahold of a blank or hit up an older skater for some hand me downs... and skateboarding is as accesible as walking out the door.
I know the demographics of who gets to skate and who gets to snowboard around here. And I'm also not afraid to use the word 'class' like many people here seem to be. Let's not rpetend we live in Reagan's/ Thatcher's "Great Classless Society.' I'm not a Marxist but Class is still a pretty obvious, relevant and useful way to analyze society.
Why talk about my neighbourhood? Whats that got to do with it? I was priced out of your's...
Shall we compare salaries and mortages next? Family background? Whose father was down a coal mine? Thats one thing I don't miss about the UK, the more Working Class than thou debate...
Anyway. Skateboarding is salt of the earth. Snowboarding is bourgoise. I love it but thats what it is.
Again, TIC was used in this message.

Even though, I'm trying to be TIC here. It seems I am offending you b/c you obviously have a deep love of snowboarding. So I should clarify and say its Ski Resort culture that I truly can't stand. It all too often comes across as a priviliged, elitist, entitled culture and I'm a compromised wanker for giving it my $.

I've never percieved skateboarding as any kind of cultural or class related spiritual journey let alone any kind of way to express your anger with society. I think some people dig themselves way too far into how other people look at them and become quite self-delusioned about the statements they are trying to make.
Anyways it just seems a little arrogant and anti-progressive to suggest anyone is "spiritually' inferior" becuase they may find what they need in another form.
I feel sorry for all the spiritually inferior people whom have never even heard of the sport. I suppose they are going to hell as well. Or maybe they are all Bush supporters.
Oh by the way, this was all TIC. No sign of passive agressiveness here.

Point taken.
Now piss off.
Of course I don't think Gerry is 'spritually inferior...' jesus christ...
Apparently when you surf the waves Laird does, there is no question there is a 'higher power.' So there you have it, only big wave riders get close to God.

so this dude dies and goes up to heaven and is getting the tour from st. peter and all...
he sees janis joplin, jimi hendrix and laird hamilton playing hackysack. he says to st. peter, "wtf? when did laird die?"
st. peter hushes him, "sshhh! that's not laird! that's god. he just likes to pretend he's laird."

For the record I respect skateboarding as much as anything else. FP, I've also purchased your publications and read some of the stories/rants. I'm not trying to disrespect you, but you cannot say your being sarcastic and hold a serious tone. Kinda like telling someone your just playing around as you point a loaded gun at thier head.
Tone speaks just as clearly as words

i apologize, if i did not make it clear where and when i was being sarcastic... i sort disagee with your point about tone and sarcasm. i think one can relay sarcasm with obvious and overt over the top outlandishness but maybe not on the internet and perhaps some cultural differences are showing here.
i appreciate your support and thanks for checking out my stuff.
