But I will say skateboards, esp the good ones arent cheap.

Lucky for me skateboards, not cars, not pimp jewlery or any other materialistic object have been my most prized possession for the majority of my life. They are simple and easily replaced. I think they're only expensive if you don't weed through the hype. There's few reasons to spend more than a $100 on a complete that'll last about as long as a surfboard given the same amount of use.
Any pursuit that gives you the feeling of progression is a worthy one even if it's scooting. We just hope that they would graduate to a more worthy pursuit that will take them to a higher order of progression.
Just FYI IMO TIC Rock Climbing is probably higher up there progressionwise then surfing and skateboarding. I tried but I can't handle it so I stick with what I know.
I do have to say that there is an extremely materialistic culture associated with ski resorts, but you just have to weed through the hype just like with skating and more so surfing.

for the record, i don't hate snowboarders. i'm a fan of gerry and i do think class analysis is relevant

bluesilver, you made an earlier point that alluded to some self-importance on my part. i can take that.

i remember as a kid reading craig stecyck and the way he had of making you feel, as a surfer or skateboarder that you were the center of the universe and what you were involved with was profound and crucial. while that is obviously not true and potentially arrogant, i've found it a useful way to write, especially if served with a healthy dose of self-deprecation.

if you want to write about the world, write about it from the stance you are famliar with. don't write a 'history of the world.' write a skateboarder's history of the world. celebrate your narrow perspective and you'll be able to make a lot more interesting points. and i think you can do this without sounding too self-important, at least that's the goal.

i try to do the same when writing about anything not just stuff i'm involved in. whether it was writing about Parkour or a homeless camp.

I agree, but same with skating. What about the whole bling-bling-ghetto-fab thing. Or who's got the best and latest shoes? Dosent dub rims sponser skaters. Thinking maybe guys like Chad Muska. Theres like a whole comercial hip hip type thing going on. So really I think it can be just as materialistic and not any less.

As for the resorts, I've worked for them and have worked them. Working them is almost like skating a pool. The feeling that you could get busted at anytime for poaching or out runnig ski patrol. Not everyone pays for tickets and there's definbately ways around the system. Then theres backcounrty snowboarding, which I think is the closest thing there is to surfing. You work for every turn and most of the time its bottomless pow.

Both have differnt styles and if you wnat to hate you can focus on hating the resorts or hating skaters that rock gold grills and ice, but if you have teh experience you know there are good and bad to both and hard to claim one is more materialistic or comercial than the other.

But really after lat season I pretty much over snowboarding and would rather move back to the beach and just surf.

What sport has the biggest douche? I don't know of anyone in snowboarding or surfing that could beat that kid. If anyone could I'd be stoked to know.

I acctually like the new body style, but I think it's less aerodynamic, thus crappy gas mileage

it does not get 32 mpg, maybe 23 if i was lucky and had turned it into a flatbed and its got over 100,000, well cared for and no i wont sell it

are u really getting 32mpg in a tacoma?
23 sound more likely, havent checked mine for a while but if its getting 32 then the farm truck is my new surf rig

Yeah it was a 1999 2WD 2.0 I4 engine. Reg bed, extended cab(xtra cab) SR5, cruise, 5 speed manual. Even if I had the bed loaded down for a camping trip, I never noticed a difference in power and averaged 31 or 32 miles per gallon on the freeway, easy driving. At the time, I thought that they all did that well. Only change I made was a K&N air filter, good oil, changed the coolant/sparks etc. No major repairs or mods. I miss it!

I am not stoked that I just read the last two pages and found that like most threads on the OSP they revolved around skateboarding and snow.
The service here sucks.
