Mr. Jack Johnson

I hear people on here ripping into him a lot, but have not really heard anyone say why they hate him so much.
This dude at work seems to really like him and he was talking about how awesome jack johnson and his life is - making music and surfing. I mentioned that he's not all that well liked by the surfing folks I know, but i'm not sure why. I've never really listened to enough of him to form an opinion.
I know Pete thinks we are being lulled into stupidity by his stuff.

This guy at work, his *argument* would be that you always see mr johnson surfing with folks on tv, so how could surfers hate him?

the world wants to know.

There is a lot of hate for the dude..

Youngest invitee into the Pipeline master, consistently good surfer, calls Sunset Beach home and takes care of the North Shore's schools and youth through his foundations, makes decent music, travels the world and now has a trillion dollars thanks to college students buying his album's like adderall.

I'm jealous.

I think you are referring to a satirical open letter i wrote to JJ some time back.

I don't hate JJ. I want to like him but his music really bores me and inspires nothing in me. I feel artists have an obligation to society to inspire and/ or educate. JJ is indeed trying but I find it hard to get revved up to save the environment when listening to this type of dross. JJ literally lulls his audience into being a complacent consumer. Of course there are plenty like him, but b/c of his reputation, I have higher expectations

I also don't see how you can be an 'environmentalist' and be affliated with a major record label.

Normally, I could care a less but his music is so inoffensive it becomes offensive.

I just like to see a little sweat, blood and tears. A little creativity, a little energy and passion, something angular, post-modern even. I want to be slapped in the face, made to cry. I want to be challanged. I want some irony. I want my hair to stand on end. I want to be put into a highly alert trance. JJ is the antithesis of all this. He is the death of rock and roll. The very fact that JJ is championed as the choice of 'college kids' means we've lost.

I do admitt my critique is little more than subjective opinion about music and art.

JJ should make me feel like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG5amE6TRwc but fails horribly.

My sister sent me a Nick Drake Cd the other day. My oh my, it had me in trembling...

Some music is lfe and death. THink about the angst of being fourteen. You against the f*cking world...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zkzpoWEAwI

When I'm in the pit of despair, GSYBE lift me up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynoMnQDy8Tk

JJ cheapens it all.

Ah who cares, this is depressing now...

Interesting. I guess I never really payed attention to his music to really decide if it was any good.
I wouldn't mind being a surf bum who made music for trillions, though.

This dude at work was pretty offended when i mentioned that JJ might be gay.

My 12 year old daughter seems to know his music...
I have his 1st disc...
Stopped listening after a 1/2 dozen plays tho...
Nothing really wrong with him...
Just nothing really special...

This is reason enough.

I like his tunes fine. And even if it's affectation, I'd rather support a charlatan who plays the enviro-greenie card, than some worthless punk or some gangsta-rappin hood.
