Downhill...all the way.

Postby Wilbur Kookmeyer » Fri Feb 19, 2010 8:54 pm

Four score and seven years ago….
We have nothing to fear, but fear itself…
These are the times that try men’s souls…
I regret but I have one live to give for my country…
No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You win the war, by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country…
The course is too bumpy and needs to be fixed…

What?

Yeah... Lindsey Vonn, an American competing in the Olympics had that too offer after her fall and losing the gold to the German chick.

Not exactly in line with other great quotes from another type of American.
The type that knew that greatness is only achieved through adversity.

Guess what Lindsey…..you were not the only one who raced on that course, and you were not the only one to fall, but there were more that failed to fall than there were that failed to rise to the challenge of the course and succeed.

Nothing, and I mean not one single thing, that is any good has been had in my life through anything less than pain, heart ache, adversity, stress, throwing myself into the wall, into the mix, and falling, falling, getting back up, and falling some more.

I have learned more from my failures than I ever will from my successes.

Lindsey Vonn is an example of an American.

She is a prime example of an entire people that have become complacent, entitled, fat, lazy, boring, and complete prim donnas.

I am not great American.

I am not in a battlefield, I have not bled for my country, I have not overcome as much adversity as others, but that is just it…most of us never will.

And no other generation will know the pains of the ones that came before them.

And when you apply the math to that, feed in 1000 channels of commercial influence, cell phones, iPods, instant gratification, what do you get?

An entire country full of Lindsey Vonn’s whining about the challenges that they are faced with.

Yeah, I know about the ankle and the way she has marketed that injury to make us see her as some kind of heroine, but I see right through that.
She is not the only competitor in the Olympics overcoming injury, fatigue, and bumpy courses.

A man lost his life pushing the limits of his sport before the games even began.

Who cares about her ankle?

Yet any minute now they will gather a collective sigh and she will be deemed ‘America’s Sweetheart’, and the sad part is, they will be 100% correct.

Sharp, tart, smooth, tight...
But the actual berry tastes bad in yer mouth...

Cranberries are a good metaphor...
For Surf in Oregon...
Sweet looking...
But full of bitterness...
And disappointment...
Kind of like dingleberries...
Horrifying when you find them...
But strangely satisfying.

I'm having a hard time caring about the Olympics at all.

Maybe because I'm not an avid practitioner of any of the sports, or maybe because I'm no athlete.

Maybe because the only exposure I have had to the Olympics is when I check my e-mail, I see the Yahoo news clips... and it's all about people behaving badly.

I feel no connection to the sports, the people, the hype, the advertisers, any of it.

Yeah, the Olympics is a great feel-good multi-cultural way of pretending we all get along.

You find dingle berries strangely satisfying but you won't pee in your wetsuit? That makes sense.

I dig the Olympics, always have ever since I can remember watching them as a little kid in the early 70's.

That Von chick was annoying as hell. I could care less if she took home another medal or not. Julie Mancuso should've gotten all the press IMO. Cool girl, tons of stoke, fun loving and got her fair share of the hardware. There a ton of great stories within the context of the events and the American media can only report on so much and it's a shame when they latch on to stories that make me yawn or worse yet, cringe. Von made me cringe.

I'm still amped to see the US hockey teams play and I'm watching the women's short program figure skating as I type this...hot, hot, hot.

lindsey Von skis better than anyone i have ever seen.
I am a former downhill racer and have been following her on the wold cup for a few years. I have never seen anyone ski like her. She is just flat out amazing. After winning a world cup down hill last year, someone handed her a bottle of champagne, she couldn't get it open to to spray it. So, a guy knocked the cork off with a ski, you know like with a sword. Except he
broke the neck off and she didn't she it was broken off. She grabbed it and cut her thumb almost off.
The next week at Val D Isere she raced with it duct tapped to her ski pole and won.
Wilber, you do not even know what the hell you are talking about.
