Merk...Smith has been largely inoffensive but I'm pushing for a Dem majority in all areas of government so that hopefully we can look forward to the potential of undoing much of the damage done over the last 8 years without conservative resistance of any consequence.

Smith voted for a federal ban on physician assisted suicide after the voters from our great state twice enacted the law. He said he had to vote his conscience. I call BS on that. My particular view on the political system is an elected official should vote the coscience of his constituents when they have taken a clear position on a matter, use their judgment when the consituents haven't. In this case the first law passed by 51% of the vote, the second by 60%. It passed twice, the second time by a large margin. I generally don't think Smith is a bad politician but that vote pissed me off.

Gotta go with Merkley.

I've contacted Smith numerous times over the years and never, ever, had a reply until recently. The dirtbags pushing the 241 Toll Road Extension into Trestles/San Onofre appealed the decision of the California Coastal Commission to the Fed Commerce Dept. A hearing was pushed forward on the Commerce Dept agenda.

Gordon sits on the relevant Senate oversight committee. So I contacted Gordon and told him to use his influence to allow the local, Coastal Commission decision denying the Toll Road to stand. In other words, don't allow Bush appointees in Washington DC override a local matter.

My first ever response from his office came back saying how sorry he was that he couldn't help, but that it was a matter to be decided in California. He's right, but for the wrong reason. He was just brushing me off without addressing the core issue or even acknowledging that a 'local' matter was schedule to be considered by Bush Administration hacks.

I can't get over the golf clubs. I know, more than a decade has passed, and I should let it go, but I can't.
The reason I can't, isn't the clubs themselves, they are just a symbol. They represent, for me, a gulf that can never ever be bridged. They speak to a life of luxuriance and opulence that borders on offensive to me.
Sure, it was his money, he can do what he wants. But I don't feel that someone with a value sytem like that is capable of representing me, or anyone I've ever met or known. The gulf is imply too wide.

I always let my 10 year old fill out the mail in ballot. She fills it out based on counting signs in our neighborhood...

For the Presidential vote, I was soooo close to blacking the "other" bubble and writing in "go f yourself". I'm not sure why, at that time, when I had already known who I was going to vote for, doing that struck me as a good idea.

Gotta go with Smith.

Merkley is just way too much of a dweeb.

At least with Smith, when he kicks you in the nuts, he tells you "Hey...I'm gonna kick you in the nuts."
