Kind of interesting although I'm not sure if I buy it. I'll still wear mine.

Excellent essay on how easily people are manipulated by fear. Honolulu as one of the worlds most livable cities? Wow, I love Hawaii, but I can only take Honolulu for a few hours, it reminds me of Vegas. As far as cycling goes , i LOVE riding my bike to work, it's the best part of my day. I'm fortunate to live in a bike friendly city, and my 6 mile commute to work is about 90% bike trail, so I don't have to deal with too much traffic, but the sections where I do are busy streets, and while I haven't been hit YET, I have been clipped once, and cut off by cars a few times. I wear a helmet. It doesn't seem like too much of a burden for what ever little bit of protection it offers. When I was a kid, I never wore a helmet, logged probably thousands of miles on my bike, and while I did leave a fair amount of skin on the pavement, somehow my noggin survived. Didn't affect affect affect me at all!
Life is too important to be taken seriously.

Portland beat out all the other major cities including kicking Seattle's behind.

Agree with the culture of fear observations. Very Much Disagree with with not wearing a helmet.
I worked full time for a Bike-N-Hike 90-93. My HELMET encased melon has survived an airborn backward 180 ending with head first landing on asphalt, being slammed to the ground and drug under the front of a late 70's Mercury Montego, countless high and low speed off road FAILS. Watched a close friend DIE in front of me...looked like she did when the helmet split in two. I am absolutely positive it saved her life with only mild concussion. I have seen and felt alot of sound reasons to support wearing a bike helmet. This coming from a guy who used to race down I-5 in the mid 80,s on his Honda Interceptor no helmet, thin cotton parachute pants and a big naive grin. Stoked to see anyone rail against the machine. However telling people the risk to your BRAIN ! does not justify wearing a helmet is pure shenanigans. This guy should focus on airbags. How many times has a bike helmet killed the person riding next to you.
All ya gotta do is ask for it.

Wear a helmet, dont wear a helmet...just stay riding where you should be, stop at stop signs and red lights, stay off the sidewalks, ride in the direction of traffic, quit splitting lanes...especially at intersections, and quit acting like the cars around you owe you something....

Tools.

Alive because of a stupid foam helmet...
Never ride without one...
Especially since I realized I wasn't immortal...
(at about 35)...
Do what you want.

Fascinating. I rode a bicycle for years, including in some bad accidents, without ever considering a helmet. Never saw anyone wearing one, never crossed my mind. When I started riding in Portland, I never considered not wearing a helmet. Just figured I would feel pretty stupid if I died of an easily preventable head injury. When my toddler started riding a bike, she got a helmet from day one. Too many horror stories from a friend in the medical field. Again, figured I'd feel pretty bad if my daughter died a preventable death. But it's not fear motivating me, just taking easy precautions.

Interestingly, my dad was in a bad motorcycle accident many years ago. The doctor told him he lived because he wasn't wearing a helmet. I always used that as an excuse for not wearing a seat belt. 25 years later, he died in a car accident that a seat belt would have saved him from.

As apposed to a smart foam helmet?

Not so sure I would call anything that saved my life "Stupid"...
Example.... I had a major heart attack but was saved by that stupid docter.

But hey... "Do what you want."

I slipped carrying my bike down a slippery staircase today and hit my head on the handrail, without my helmet I would've crushed more than my mellow swagger.
