i shaped this clunker about 5 years ago. my goal was thick and floaty and i turned out toooo thich and floaty. but it surfs. looks like hell but it surfs.

I used some cheap acrylic paint directly on the foam. the easiest route but doesn't exactly produce uniform color (as you can see).

One first timer and one second timer will be attacking a 7'8" hybrid and a 10'2" log blank this weekend. Aiming to go from blank to finished board or at least laminated in 72 hours. One PU/PE and one PU/Epoxy. Here's hoping.

upside -- just dug up a mikita power planer from the dust of the workshop around here! Should speed up the foam removal process if maybe too much, but I think that makes me a de facto pro shaper... or something slightly more dangerous.

Gonna pull the trigger and build one of these this fall:

Anybody ever build one of their boards or boats? Or any other "stitch and glue" vessel?

Mission accomplished (mostly). Still some sanding to do and a fin box to install. Made all the mistakes along the way -- mixed some funky color, ran out of glass, warbly free laps, lumpy blobs, overthin blanks, bubbles under the glass, etc... Turns out the two years between boards erased any skill from the first.

But, it was also a lot of fun. Some really good time with my sister. And, in the end, we both got pretty much exactly the boards we started out to make. Pictures will follow. Kinda want to shape another... soon!

For what it's worth, here are some pics. Still need to sand, gloss, and put in the fin box...

Nice work, erzats. Good looking shape, and I like the simple, minimalist look. What's the fin choice?

that's a good question Andy. I don't have a good feel for how different fins behave. I usually just ride the board I've got and decide that any quality/lack of quality is due to the waves or my surfing rather than the fin. But... Definitely single, something to augment the pintail. I like getting up to the nose, but this isn't really a nose rider. I may try something fairly long and somewhat flexible. Wide base... medium to lots of rake. I have no clue. I'm very open to suggestions/discussion.
