I admire anyone who hunts with the bow and arrow. More so when the game is as dangerous as a rutting bull that is charging in looking for that cow it keeps hearing and sniffing....but not seeing.....

I am struggling deciding if I am going to step into bow this year or not.

Tick tock.....you know?

I would hunt with a bow except for two things:

cost to re-rig (purchase bow, arrows, etc)

concern for making the fastest, most humane kill.

I have a friend who killed an elk two years ago and found a calcified/scar tissue encrusted broadhead in the animal. I have had numerous bowhunting co-workers describe to me in excruciating detail the final moments of an animals life, which I felt was needlessy prolonged due to the use of a bow and broadheads. If I wanted to prove I could get that close to these animals (which, two weeks ago, my friend and I watched a young spike mount a cow, from about 18 feet away!) I would take a photo. I dont really buy that you have to be a superior hunter to hunt with a bow... the timing of the seasons is more favorable, and the animals behavior doesnt change as drastically as it does when it is rifle season.

Hess, where you going to hunt? My Dad's been bugging me about going east for RME, but I don't know with the whole tag fiasco. It used to be you just chose a season and bought a tag. Now You have to enter lotteries and the such.

in the coast range, the only thing that bugles is an out-of-area hunter.

siouxon unit just south of mt st helens. all the roads are washed out so we dont have to worry about pesky quad hunters screwin up hunts. coastal elk in washington are vocal as hell but its a war zone there almost as bad as rifle season. i started out rifle hunting as a kid but my buddies finally talked me into tryin flingin arrows and i was instantly hooked. never goin back. it definately is one of the most expensive sports ive gotten into. im sure you wont be dissapointed. the hardest thing about it is practicing all year . this is the perfect time to scout though. im possibly going to levinworth wa. to go on a mule deer hunt but im undecided. any buddy slay any mule deer around there?

Hardly yokel crap here 47....

Killer

Predatory by nature.
Natural Killer.

My eyes are set forward for a reason.
There is no need to see behind me.

I shall not know the primal fear.
I never have.

The weak run before me,
on slick grasses.

Cordite has a smell to it.
It lingers in the air about you after pulling the trigger.

I shot once,
and then flowed like a ghost on the wind.

Through the trees,
and grasping undergrowth.

He laid there breathing his
last breath.

I put my hand upon his throat.
Felt his life give way.

The weak run before me.
They are weaker than he.

I
am weaker than he.

Yet I
slayed him kindly.

I see the those around me
that deserve to be trampled.

The weak are not so
of physical, but of heart.

Of ethics.
Of mind.

But never brag of strength,
for your own weakness will be known.

They fear me at times.
I have to admit the rush to it.

But it is not MY fault
that they run before me.

I stalk this earth,
with mediocre intentions.

But my heart,
knows I am a killer.

Last night on the way home we saw 5 bucks in the space of three miles, that's as many as I've seen in the last year. Saw a forked-horn, 4 point, and a 6 point hanging out at the end of the driveway. I guess they must be in rut.

I'm not so interested in goats and sheep, but it would be nice to go elk hunting with the old man again.
