What pisses me off...........

This forum is for SURF topics such as localism and rants that are usually negative in nature. If you're a baby, complainer, or generally think you're right and everyone else is wrong this is the place for you. PLEASE NOTE, all forum rules still apply, but just a little more liberally enforced. Registration is required.

The overall trendeyness and lack of functionality. You know how many people I have helped scrape off the pavement from accidents involving fixed gear bikes. People who shouldn't be riding them on the street. It's to the point where I don't even bother anymore.

As for riding single fins, thats a great point. I have one and fun to mess around on in crapy to average surf. And great for guys who rip like Machado and Rasta, who may have become board with conventional equipment. But when it's on this average joe sticks with what works, 3 fins, maybe 4 on a high performance shape. Pretty much how I see the whole retro thing. There's a reason for the term retro.

So the same could be applied to my everyday commute and fixed gear bikes. I stick with what works and gets the job done best. And really its far more serrious becuase at the end of the day I have a family to come home to.

Is it retro if you never left it in the first place?

A fixed-gear is completely functional and street safe (agguably safer than a coasting bike) if the rider knows what they are doing. More efficient if you select the right gearing, minimal maintenance, cheaper, less wear... it goes on. Right tool for the right job. Trendyness or not. They work for me.

Most road bikes are over-priced and over geared. You can get a comparable track/ fixed gear for a fraction of the price of a road bike.

It blows my mind that people still care what anyone thinks about what surfboard they ride or what bike or whatever. Conformists.

You make a good about road bikes, but why not just a standard single speed or a commuter with less gears. Both options have brakes and the gears are not fixed making it eaiser to control in traiffic?

fixed gear riding is like noseriding. either you can do it or you can't. If you can't, it's dangerous and you're going to fall. If you can do it, you have the ride of your life.

It blows my mind that people will dismiss something b/c its 'trendy.' That is as bad a blindly accepting it b/c its trendy. Its rad we live in an era and location that you can get your hands on a performance thruster or retro fish, cross-bike or track bike. Again, ride/ surf what suits you and your style... blah blah...

I'm on my Heelys for a week.

those are good options also. personally i think a fixed hub helps you subtly control your speed in difficult situations... ie cornering, wet leaves, icy conditions and so on... again, if the rider is competent.

Doc single fins dont have to be retro. Isnt a single fin on a longboard fairly standard? Mine is and its a vanilla Surftech.

Gills, Neck, I dont care what people ride, surfboards or bikes. My surfboard quivers prob more diverse than you would think and I dont ride potato chip thrusters. I ride what works for me. If you can ride a fixe safley go for it. Just tired of hearing about people gettinghurt on them while comuting.

And I am not a conformist.

Nor do I try not to be one.

I just do what I do. My opinions are my own based on experince and what I like.

agreed. riding a track bike on the streets can be as silly as trying to learn to surf on a 6'2" rounded pin.

I'm not calling you a conformist. But often your opinions aren't just opinions. How do I know? Because I have the tendency to do the same.

You all spend so much time avoiding becoming a conformist that youve conformed to be uncomformable, which seems to be the conformist thing to do nowadays.
