What's a good first trip? (cheap)

Postby ghosting » Mon Jan 18, 2010 8:25 pm

I'm wondering what's a good first surf trip?

Medium/Not so hot on the skills - but need to surf somewhere warmish for a bit. Want to get away and enjoy some decent waves and warmth.

What's a good trip to plan on?

I'm thinking April/May?

Airplane? Car? I don't care. Need to travel sooooooooon.

Mine was the purple micro dots but that might be a little heavy.

I'd suggest "some orange sunshine. do you have any Allman Brothers?"

I would suggest that you skip the manufactured variety and keep it all natural...forget tripping bro go shrooming. Make a nice tea, leave your keys and wallet at home and take a walk someplace.

I think i'd prefer a couple caps between the cheek and gum, let that silly simon soak in real good, you know, taste that anticipation. Then leave my keys and wallet and clothes at home, and go climb the highest tree and bark at the moon.

liberty caps or blue bells?? both are Oregon grown and perhaps even Tilth certified.

I know of the secret little beach town in mex. No one goes there and the waves are thigh to chest consistently. Perfect for nose riding. It's called Sayulita. Ever hear of it??? Everyone thinks it's perfect. Just perfect.

Or just go to Costa Rica.

Fly into SD.
Rent a car.
Break the rental car agency's rule about going into Mex.
Cross the boarder and head South West.
It will work itself out after that.

Hahaha. I thought you were gonna spill the beans about CAbo.
As MC said "starts doing it's thing" and come May the heat turns on, clearing the place out a bit. Also a good bet as swell season shifts 'cuz you can go both ways in CAbo.

Beware. We did this 6 yrs. ago and got la mordida grandismo coming back across the border. Those rental cars have bar code stickers in the windows and are a dead give away.

what's the budget? Get a rig that'll let you lock all your stuff up and doesn't look "surfy". Get a pair of binoculars, a fishing rod, and a crab ring. Maybe some snorkelling stuff. Hit 101, and head North... or South.
when you see a spot that looks good, paddle out.
when the surfs no good, fish, blow a glass float, carve a Haida Pole. see how many days you can feed yourself from the Ocean. Take a lot of pictures. Check out Mavericks, buy a cool t-shirt in Santa Cruz. Cook all your meals, have some beach bonfires, read a novel.
Don't ask about surf spots, hug the coast and find 'em.

it you really want to go cheap drive down to CAL if you havent already. theres tons of coastline to hit!

if your set on flying go central america, flights are around 500 bucks but food and lodging is cheap.
