Aloha! I'm planning on moving to Corvallis sometime this summer. Been gettin spoiled in the islands for the past 5 years, but cost of living here can be a drag. Can't say I'll miss the crowds either. Born a mainland haole and grew up surfing NC, but never been to the west coast. Not sure what to expect of Oregon. Way different I'm sure. From the few people I've talked to sounds like a chill vibe & epic wilderness. A little nervous about the water temps and rain.
I'm def down to do more hiking, fishing and snowboarding but can't stay out of the surf for long. I've gotten a weird penchant for the more atypical waves...slabs, wedges, etc. and a bad addiction to barrels. Lookin at the map seems like plenty of beachbreak and potential for some cool reefs too. Stoked to do some exploring anyway. Anyone have any wisdom or words of warning they wouldn't mind sharing?
Thanks!

There are barrels to be found but often few and far between onshore, crumbling slop. Also, 10-15' Hawaiian does not equate to 10-15' Oregon...Oregon surf is certainly smaller but far less accessible. Not saying you can't get it, just saying there are far fewer channels and options than what it sounds like you're used to. Winter surf that looks promising can be destroyed by the heavy local weather that often occurs simutaneously...gotta keep your windows open and expectations low. If you're gonna surf slabs you'll need to get in with the crowd that's into that game...jet skis, life jackets, helmets, short term disability insurance, etc. Head west to Newport & go to Ossies.

Good luck

Thanks for the intel Doc. I'm definitely gonna stay open minded about the surf over there. Stoked for somethin different anyway. And sorry I didn't mean to come off as a prick with that mention of "slabs." On my shortboard I'll take a punchy beachbreak or long point any day. I picked up bodyboarding a few years ago and that opened up shorebreaks, wedges and manageable size "slabs." Anything over 15ft (faces) and count me out on any board.
A good session at rockys or sunset is unbeatable, but we've got some cool spots to get away from the crowds. They took time to find and get wired but can throw some trippy waves in the right conditions.
Looks like I'll be gettin out there late July. You'll probably hear more rambling and beggin for tip offs from me then ha ha.

I've never met Doc but have always pictured him as "Doc" from Steinbeck's Cannery Row. I think that Doc would like surfing in Oregon cause he would find the coastal ecosystem as interesting as the waves and even if the surf sucked would find something interesting to explore.

Right now I'm nursing a separated shoulder courtesy of Martial Arts...who knew art could hurt you?
Surf? Some...in between onshore winds and crap work schedules.
SmithG...I don't recall any texts from you regarding go outs...so no, you have not seen me. I am deep underground.
It's has been a reasonably crappy surf winter for me sad to say...I've picked off a few days here and there but I am happy to find that on the days i did go I was largely able to have a peak to myself wherever I was...Surf in Oregon.
I've been SUP'ing (not SUS'ing for you worriers) alot of late...waiting for the river to calm down enough to put my hands in it on the prone PB...
Anyway, Steinbeck...his doc didn't surf.

I agree this winter has sucked, and I have been too damn busy with shite that doesnt really matter as much as catching waves. Why am I so dumb, why dont I surf at least twice a week? I know I would be happier. My palm reader told me I need to be in the water more, she had no idea I was a surfer.

La Nina is fading... so 'they' say. It has however, left us some impressive sandbars, here and there.
