I'm sure a surf park would do very well in Portland. Not sure how I feel about it though... seems like eventually it would clog up the real line-ups as more people would have access to a consistent, less-intimidating wave to learn on.
My favorite thing about surfing up here (as opposed to where I grew up in SoCal) is the lack of crowd and (generally) mellower vibe. Seems like a wave park could influence that in one of two ways:
Either the Portland surfers will spend less time driving over the hill (even if it's 40 bucks or so for a couple hours that's comparable to gas $$ for the 3 hour round trip) or it's going to embolden a whole new contingent of people to get out and surf 'real' waves once they have some experience in a controlled environment.
That said, it seems like there's no current or future plans to build one here, so it's a moot point. For now.
