Can have some decent moments, but can also be the beginning of the end. Looks like a couple small bumps to start things out. Get it while you can........

Greetings from the injured reserve! Still rehabbing the ol' t spine, but since I was posted up in LC over the weekend anyway (rip ride rally!) eked out a few sessions in a desperate attempt to fill the void.

First session lasted all of 20 minutes; felt good to paddle around, but pop ups were cumbersome and painful. Got one sloppy ride and told myself that was it for surfing this weekend; just gonna enjoy the Big Skateboarding Event (rip ride!).

And I did... but also realized that I forgot I don't party anymore when booking camp within a mile of the rally. After a sleepless night and not even a solid buzz for the trouble, I decided to dawn patrol rather than hang with a hundred hungover skaters. Popped a few aspirin, tempered my expectations, cruised south and managed a few otter slops in the dull glow of sleep deprivation. Session lasted about an hour and while stiff, I felt a little less encumbered (in my soul, if not my cruddy ligaments).

Told myself that was it for the weekend, enjoyed more Rip Ride! and got some sleep finally. Met up with Box the next day and after minimal cajoling, ended up borrowing his soft top for a session. A bit more foam was a bit more forgiving and I was finally able to draw a few okay lines and goof around a little. Cross swell was creating some interesting wedges off the headland and every once in awhile some decent size would crop up on the outside. Chased the juice with mixed results, but was simply stoked to finally get a few hours of water time and feel somewhat centered again. RIP RIDE!!!

Told the boss man I needed the afternoon off as I wanted to catch peak of swell and tide window. Fun afternoon carving and slicing into crystalline green walls on my new small wave shortboard. Fun little bump, albeit short, that maxed out at 7-8 @ 10 to 11 seconds for a few hours in the early afternoon. Zippy push tide lefts that were lining up quite nicely on a HT bar that got somewhat rampy on the inside. Doubled up seshwise and was pretty toasted by evening followed by a very peaceful rest coast side.

Paddled out with Howly on Sunday. Nice day to be out and had a great time. We switched up boards and let's just say he did a lot better on the soft top than I did on his. A bit less foam was a bit less forgiving and exposed some paddling inefficiencies that the foamie was covering up. Wave count was by far the lowest it's ever been. Definitely got some work to do but I'm re-focused and stoked on the challenge to get there. Disappointed in my performance, but overall still a pretty good day on the water (there are not bad days, etc...). Frothin' to get back out there soon to give it another go. Stoke remains high.

So on another note.... a group of maybe 7, 20 something kids were posted up in front of us yesterday. Almost everyone one of them had an expensive camera, like 4 or 5 peps, and there was an Aqua Tech housing laying there as well? I thought immediately these kids are not from around here. Not your typical Portland 20 somethings having a beach day. 2 blond and fit females eventually suited up, paddled out on fishy shapes, and one of them was a pretty good surfer. After the session she posed for pics on the beach, with various product placement items like water bottle, towel, and leash etc. So 5 or 6 photogs and one SoCal pro is what I am deducing at this point, but still kinda scratching my head thinking this gal must be someone special? Why so many photogs and what for?

At this point something clicked prob from lurking social media outlets and I had an hunch who she might be, a young surfer from San Diego name Anna Ehrgott. Kinda like the female version of Cyrus Sutton I think? Or from that same north county Encinitas zone and a protégé. Not necessarily a competitive pro, but lifestyle free surfer type. One that gets paid to endorse products and lifestyle, travels, and surfs mostly cruisey waves. So sure I get, it seems like a pretty good gig, but I was totally turned off at how contrived it all was seeing it all unfold in front of me. A gal I’d think was pretty cool from her social media portrayal seemed well kinda fake to me and didn’t even crack a smile on land or in the water in what is usually a greeting of the tribe? Maybe it was that SoCal attitude or perhaps creeped out by my old man status? Who knows….. Not sure where I am going here, but just funny to see the behind the scenes and realizing how contrived a lot of the social media stuff is esp when it come to the outdoor lifestyle and surfing genera.

Sounds alot like the ad shoot I saw at SS a couple weeks back, drones, fire department, life guards, meal tables for staff. I never did my homework to figure out who they were or what they were schlepping.

That sounded crazy like some Nike shizit or a car commercial. Was not a production like that.

Just some kids hanging out and then they started pulling cameras out...... that's when I was like WTF is going on. After some Instagram analysis turns out it was a so called "Pro Surfer" but really an Instagram Infuencer, a co-owner of a towel company, and a bunch of wanna be Instagram photogs. The new reality or normal of.how you can make money trips.me out.

Probably grumpy you were in her shot, Major. It's the narrative of solitude and adventure that racks up the clicks, not the reality of sharing the lineup with us "olds".

Thanks for the support guys....... was just telling my therapist how tired I was of my 9 to 5 lifestyle and how I was going to become a middle aged "Influencer", travel around in my van, and promote products like viagra, testosterone booster, hair club for men, etc.

Hot day at the local. Me and one other. East winds. Small and gutless waves. Still, better to be in the water than not.

First decent session in months. Back recovery has been somewhat non-linear, so glad to have made some tangible progress. Got back into form on some average mid-day windswell-- 4@10 W, consistent yet stunted. Waves ranged waist - shoulder on the ebb, offering plenty of slow-moving handicap ramps useful for working myself back up to snuff, eventually leading to a few steeper, faster peelers as the tide receded.

Despite decent conditions and summer temperatures, locale was uncrowded-- only a handful summer adventurers out on rented longboards, none of whom were especially discerning of position leaving quite a few options open. Flock of pelicans was posted up, hunting, divebombing in very close proximity, evoking both awe for nature's intelligence and gratitude that those common era dinos aren't territorial and prone to strafing, as them rascal crows tend to do from time to time.

Good day overall and happy to be somewhat agile on the water, and more importantly in the water, to drum up a few sorely needed kicks while the opportunity is knocking.

Nice Howly....... made a left instead of a right after work yesterday. Threw a middle finger to the sweltering cluster fuked east and a shaka to the wide open west and got on the highway.

After a traffic free and fairly quick hour, found some very fun and oh so glassy rights at an open and very scenic beachie I haven't surfed in a while. It was one of those dreamy heat wave days on the coast where there wasn't a nukeing NW wind or was it shrouded in dense drizzly fog. Temp was perfect and warm enough to loose the shirt while checking the surf.

There were 2 peaks working with 2 to 4 heads on each. Woulda been 50 heads plus in say San Diego or Fla. Packed the fun board, but was far from gutless and opted for the quad fishy and coulda rode my small wave SB if I had it. Water was cold but felt so damn good after Tues nights misery in the concrete jungle. The kine lil 4 at 11 west was perfect for this spot providing decent shape and a bit of punch. Lully, but you wouldn't be surfing this spot if was consistent or over 5 or 6 foot.

Stuck to the peak I know just off the rip and lined up off the cedar shaked house with the red window trim. Once I dialed it in HH drops and racy CH walls slowing down to lay into some high speed cutties on wide open walls. Mostly one big turn, but some allowed for another or a hail marry credit card air or floater. Had one fins free lipper that felt so good. Surfed for 2 plus hours and ended at the next peak down which was pretty good too. Was 60 degrees by 9:30pm and slept like a baby to the peaceful rhythms of the ocean. Woke up to what looked to be rain overnight and grey skies. Went to work like a good middle aged father of 2.

Mostly maintenance at BOX's local yest am for Fathers Day surfage. Occasional lumps coming through, but mostly closely. Found a few tweeners that peeled of which I could get into on the fun board. Beaut of a morning with sunny skies and zero fog and got to paddle out and catch up with an old friend. Looks like some blips this week. Get it while you can........
