I play basketball for an hour every day at lunch then do a fitness video (yoga for surfers or boot camp) at night when I get home. I try to snowboard or surf on the weekends. If that doesn't happen, then I bike.

As far as diet goes; I cut out bad sugars, enriched bread and sweets. My biggest problem is portion control. Now I use smaller plates and actually measure my portions. I never knew what 3 ounces of chicken looked like and it isn't much.

For motivation my wife yells at me to get my @ss in shape! It works.

1/19, Fri
Pulled groin muscle paddling out
1/20, Sat
No exercise, alternate Advil & Tylenol
1/21, Sun
Four mile run with hills, very slow. The groin was sore the entire run, but not re-injured. Alternate Advil & Tylenol.
1/22, Mon
Walked to the top of the dune twice, sore, but OK. Alternate Advil & Tylenol
1/23, Tue
Six mile run with hills, slow, felt better, but still tight. Alternate Advil & Tylenol
1/24, Wed
No exercise, alternate Advil & Tylenol
1/25, Thu
Stretching & Indo board, alternate Advil & Tylenol
1/26, Fri
Returned to surfing, caught a few waves but I was very careful. No pain. Alternate Advil & Tylenol.

Tomorrow is more of a test. I need to surf bigger waves and strengthen the leg without re-injury. It's a fine line. Kaua'i in one week.

So, two days ago, I'm reaching for the coffee on the stove and then *$&^&#@(*$()$*!!!!! Youch!!! (Do fine twisting the pigeon pose during a hardcore yoga session, but the coffee reach is the one that gets me) Something pulls in my back. Been in wicked pain in the morning for two days now. What do you guys do with pulled back muscles. I"m getting old.

Okay, as a person who has to keep a constant vigilance on her own health, and has had a couple of episodes where she got a little bloated up herself,....be reasonable. Give up other carbs like the top half of a sandwich before you give up beer. I can only speak for myself, but I know that I am much happier when I can have a beer or glass of wine every night. Yes, every night.
I will eat a dinner made of only protein and vegetables just so I can have that beer.
All the other ideas are great. Definitely drink water. I start out my day with a glass of water before I even get out of bed. Also, lots and lots of vegetables--raw and steamed. They are filling, delicious and good for you, and once you cut down on all the sugar, they will actually start to taste sweet.
I cut out almost all sugar from my diet after Christmas--(except from alcohol) and for the first time in years I don't crave sweets. Except alcohol.
I hope I don't sound too much like an enabler, I just don't want you to set yourself up for failure.
Besides, when I call you out of the blue to go get a beer, you'd better go.

Oh, yes, the old switcheroo to red wine. Good idea.

Have you tried herbal tea as a substitute for the sweets? There are some that are very sweet-tasting.

A few more climbs up Mt. Tabor, and you are on your way (weigh).

None of you have anything on a guy we met on our journey. We stumbled into him on our way to pick mussels. He was lugging to blue pails up a steep trail. We asked what he had in his pails, thinking he had scored a motherload of something edible.

Sand.

He does this for hours.

They gave him three months to live.

He is proving them wrong.
